===((((( Question about 92 500SEL Oil Pressure )))))===

HI DEAR FRIENDS AND THANKS FOR YOUR HELP ...
YESTERDAY I WAS ON A 2-HOUR TRIP AND I REALIZED THAT THE OIL PRESSURE IS VERY LOW (WHEN I AM DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY @ 70 MPH IT SHOWS PRESSURE ~ 1.5 ONLY AND WHEN I AM DRIVING LOCALLY OR STOPPED AT THE RED LIGHT SIGNAL IT SHOWS ZERO PRESSURE ! ) ...
ALSO AFTER I STOPPED FOR A COFFEE (AFTER 1 HOUR DRIVING) I SMELLED SOMETHING LIKE SMOKE SO I OPENED THE HOOD AND FOUND A LITTLE SMOKING COMING FROM BEHIND THE ENGINE (THEN SHORTLY AFTER IT DISAPPEARED) ... I CHECKED THE MOTOR OIL IT WAS OK AS I CHANGED IT 2 WEEKS AGO ... THE TRANSMISSION FLUID WAS OK TOO AND NOT BURNED ... SO PLEASE CAN ANYBODY GIVE ME A SUGGESTION ABOUT THE PROBLEM(S) ...
THANK YOU VERY MUCH ...
BEST REGARDS ...
A.K

Those engines idle with very low pressure almost in the warning lamp area. It shuld jump up as soon as the rpms come up, you should have half guage at approximately 1,000 rpm or so and little more at driving speeds. I notice mine is a little higher since they started using synthetic 5-50 in my car.

Oil pressure specification (ref. Alldata) is:

600 - 750 RPM Approximately 1.3 bar

1000 RPM Approximately 2.2 bar

2000 RPM Approximately 4.8 bar

3000 RPM Approximately 5.1 bar

4000 RPM Approximately 5.3 bar

Yes but with what oil at what level did you check?.. and at what temp?.. What was the water temp?.. and the outside temp?.. and what grade oil did you have in?.. how old..?when was the filter last changed.?.. all these thing need to be here..My V12 somtimes dips to the 1.5 range and lower at the lights...IF (more often than I will admit to )I have been hitting the go small pedal for a time..So not a worry..But just keep a check.. and come back with the info if you still feel the need..Meantime you should relax and enjoy...

I would not drive a car whose oil pressure was dropping to zero.

It's your own prerogative, but if it were my car, I would have it checked immediately. May just be a faulty pressure sender or faulty gauge, and your oil pressure may be fine, but I would not drive until I knew what was up.

My humble opinion.

I agree with you Brett, but I think that more info is needed here before I would assume that was the case.. I recently had my oil light come on whist driving on the freeway.. scared the willys outa me.. but I had put a hole in the sump whilst taking flying lessons..so I just topped it up.. I always carry a couple of liters just in case...

Thanks for your cooperation ...
I checked the oil right away and it was 12:00 noon so temperature outside was ~ 80 ...
Car's temperature was slightly higher than usual but under 80 ...
Oil is my concern because I used to change oil and filter by a friend of mine at my back-yard (8 x 10W40), but the last time which was about 3 weeks ago now, I took it to a shop where they changed filter in a minute and put an oil which I don't know what grade it was ...
Should I change oil n filter again ..?

RE: ===((((( Question about 92 500SEL Oil Pressure )))))===

There is a good possibility that the oil pressure sending switch is malfunctioning. Before I did anything too drastic, I would replace the oil pressure sending switch. It is probably the problem. It was for me with my 1983 300SD. In that car the oil pressure gauage only went to about mid-way at 3000 rpms. At idle it showed no pressure. I then replaced the sender unit and, viola!, normal oil pressure readings.[:)]

But the reading is normal when I start the car until like half an hour or so after that ... Then it shows zero at a stop & slow motion and between 1 & 2 when I speed up ... Then there is the damn smell of smoke ... I am going to change the oil & filter first thing tomorrow morning ... Thank you
