Cleaning Fuel Tank

Hello everyone,
My Pierburg pump on my S500 1996 just hit the bucket.
While waiting for the pump to arrive from the states ( I live in Venezuela and the pump here cost over $800.00 I found it for $189.00 on line http://www.autohausaz.com ) I took the old pump out and the filter ( it was full of brown gas it scared the hell out of me ) I decided to clean the gas tank.

At the bottom of the tank I took out the filter hose and the strainer which was broken and to my surprise the bottom of the tank was full of dirt. I recycled clean gas several times to get all the dirt out and now it seems to be clean. My question is Can I wash it also with water to put more pressure or is there any special stuff to clean the tank inside?

I think everyone should do that (clean the tank) every few years. I will try to attach a pic of the tank from alldata let see if it will work.

You could probably give it a good water wash.

You must make sure to thoroughly dry the tank afterward. I'd recommend rinsing with a water miscible organic solvent 3 or 4 times to help rinse all the water out of the tank. I'm thinking isopropyl alcohol, ethanol, methanol, or acetone. Then dry it completely by blowing air through it for a long time.

I'm not a mechanic, and I have no experience doing this. This is just what I would do if I were contemplating the same thing.
