as usual, I could not resist and had to get a 600! I tradet in my wifes 94 S420 for a very nice looking 95 S600. The color is white the interior is the stitched deluxe leather- two tone with suede headliner and wood inlay on the steering wheel. The Car has 20 inch wheels and I believe it has all options including the rear AC. I got so hot, I could not resist. I had to give my wife the 93 S500 also white with a nice beige interior. She wanted the 600… I told her ,,yes I will program seat memory 2 for her…lol [:D]
Now the scary part: I need help defining fixes for the 600. I spend several hours reading postings about the W140 on this great forum but I still have open questions.
I definitely have to change the wiring harness; I am able to see cracks in the insulation of the loom coming from the engine. My question is: how many harnesses do I need to replace. Is it only the engine harness or harnesses or more hidden inside the vehicle? Has anybody prices on the harness, has anybody build (Rebuild a harness)?
I have more questions coming up but will post a new message for each.
You'll need two harness's...the Body mounted engine harness and the injector harness. Watch out for throttle slides on this car as well..they're brutally expensive!
Some have rebilt portions of their harness, namely around the throttle slides if I remember correctly.
If you like I'd be glad to quote you on the two harness's...just drop me an email w/ your VIN blueridgemb@gmail.com
Also, let me know if you need a manual for your 140's:)
Thanks for the input Jonathan,
I will send you the Vin. I read many postings about the decomposing harnesses but still it doesn’t answer all of my questions. You say I would have to change two of them. Does that mean only the ones in direct contact with the engine heat are decomposing?
The engine runs fine but I would like to prevent a future break down. Once I had a 95 500SL with extended warranty, it started to have idle problems and the dealer changed the engine wiring harness. At that time I had no clue about the inherent problems of the early S class.
Yes I need a Manual for both the 500 and 600. I found somebody selling CD’S on ebay, I don’t know they provide good info on how to find and fix components. I read about Alldata but I am undecided.

Brett, I am reading pcmahr postings and I have seen his rewiring job on the trottle actuators. His work is very impressive; he must have a lot of patience.
Thanks for the hint, I will visit his web site.
Werner: I know just what you mean about being scared after purchasing a 600. I bought my 1992 600 in early December 2004 (with only 58,000 miles). I've read the horrors of biodegradable wiring harnesses. I have the ADS light lit on the instrument cluster on a regular basis, etc. However...I found a light at the end of the tunnel as to my 1992 600. I read a posting that advised that the biodegradable harnesses did not start to appear on the 140s until late 1993! Wow! What a gift that was for me. I used to feel badly because my 600 was an older model...but no more. That still didn't help my ADS system however. The good news is that the system seems to work fine in the warm weather (isn't that strange!). Enjoy that S600 of yours!

Damm German Engineering !!
You are lucky with your 92, I really don't care for a new model, you have to like the car and the features and it must be nice. I had the choice to purchase a newer model, but the 95 was the nicest one and I took it. and of course the price was right!! Same for my 93 S500..then according to your statement I would not have to worry about her wire looms. I am German, but I don't agree with "German Engineering" Germany lost its engineering ability long time ago!! (when I left Germany "lol")[:D]
Why do they have to make the wire Insulation bio-degradeable? DUMMKOEPFE!
My fear is that eventually all of the looms degrade.

I agree what kind of dump F*!#K would make the wiring biodegradable, why would the wiring need faster degrading than the rest of the car. And vacums to lock and close the doors, I don't get it!! And MB obviously doesn't get it either that their crap has too high of a failure rate. I have a 91 honda civic with over 200k miles, I purchase for about $2000 back then, I drive over 60 miles a day on it for the last 2 years. I can't even drive my 95 s320 with 145k miles on the weekend cause half the crap doesn't work. This is my first MB and my last, don't was your money and energy.
Well, I agree that the Engineers made a mistake with the wiring but the whole car is still better than any other car on the market. It drives like a dream!
You have to understand that If you drive a W140 you have to have the money to get it fixed and maintained or you have to have the ability to repair and maintain the car by your self. If you don't have any of those resources, you should drive your Honda and be happy..but don't get involved with a high end car.
