Windshield replacement.

I recemtly got a rock chip on my front windshield, since it has spread. I will be getting a replacement.
1999 s320w.

I need to have a local company do it based on my insurance coverage. I guess I am asking if anyone has done the replacement and if so what are the steps that need to be taken.
[?]I know that there are two panels on either side that have to me removed before replacing the windshield.?right?[?]

I am always very concerned about people working on my car and I need to feel as though I understand what needs to be done every step of the way.

I am sure most of you appreciate the level of care,
as this is my favorite toy!

Thank you in advance for suggestions and commentary.

RE: Windshield replacement.

Dear Noctum:

Listen, do not under any circumstances, replace your windshield with an "after market" windshield!!. Your car has several sensors on the windshield and the quality of the glass of a MB windshield is far superior than anything aftermarket. You really need to talk to your insurance agant about this, and insist that it be replaced with an OEM windshield. If you get no resolution to your problem, then talk to a supervisor. If I were you, I would have the dealer install it because you will need to remove the windshield wiper assembly, etc, etc. Not unless you are an expert mechanic, I would not do this myself. The same thing happened to my car - 1999 S500- and I insisted that the windshield be replaced with OEM equipment. My argument was that when the car was insured, the windshield was OEM, and they insured it thus, therefore, original OEM only for my car. They agreed, and they replaced it OEM glass at the tune of $1040.00!! Of course, I paid the deductible of $200.00. You will have to fight them on this, but stick to your guns, and you will win. Further, if they do not agree still, threaten them with a call to your state's Insurance Commissioner. Also, your service advisor can call your insurance directly, and explain to them about this "special" windshield. Also, it will lessen the value of your car. People who buy these types of cars are very particular about the Star on all the parts in the car. If you like, please do a search on my postings, and you can read the full story on this. Let me know how it goes!!

Joey.-

Windshield replacement. and Insurance..

Big argument with my insurance about the replacement screen.. them saying they wanted to give me a Joe Shmo screen me saying MB only..they say Too expensive..I say you knew what the car was when you insured me.. they say they are the same made in same factory.. I say Mercedes dont make glass for anyone else..They say Its the same thing.. I say IF ITS GOT A MERCEDES STAR ON IT and it comes from Stugart then ok.. and YOU made me sign a form saying that I had not modified the car in any way when you insured me.. MB say screen is an INTEGRAL part of the safety cell..so you are modifying the car to suit your costs..are you saying if i get hit in the door .. you are going to fit a KIA one to replace it with.. PLUS IF i have accident and passenger and myself injured by glass because screen NOT the same as MB are you going to accept the increased liability.. will you put that in writing.. before I decide to have the screen replaced.. so I can show it to my lawyer..SUDENLY its OK to have the dealer supplied screen.. they will stand the cost..Stick to your guns.. have a genuine screen.. not a cheap replacement...Fitted by a company recomended by your Local MB stealer.. Because they know best..
