The bulb that illuminates the parktronic display above the centre vents on my 1998 S420 appears to have blown. I have searched previous posts and note that VTYAGI managed to replace the bulb. How did you gain access to the bulb in question. Anyone with any instructions or tips?? Any help would be most appreciated.
if you have a friend who works for a merc garage it would be helpful for you to have a full printout of the whole procedure from das.
failing that here are the steps:
first you have to have something thin, long and very stiff so you can release the cylinder from the glove box lock. You need to use your ignition key to turn the lock to a precise point (3/4 of the way if I remember correctly) then you will notice a little hole/notch on the perifery of the cylinder. You insert your long, thin and very stiff thingy into that hole/notch about an inch. This action will release the cylinder and you will be able to pull it out together with the key. DO NOT TRY AND PRY THE KEY OUT OF THE CYLINDER WHILST OUT OF THE LOCK AS YOUR WHOLE CYLINDER WILL DISINTEGRATE! Just lay it to a side. There is a screw down in the hole where the cylinder used to be. Unscrew. Remove the glovebox and sunglasses compartment buttons. Unscrew two screws in the sunglasses compartment and pull it out (together with the lid). You don't need to do anything else, from here on you can access the bulb from behind the display. Don't even THINK about replacing it with something from a VW or somesuch. Go to your local MB parts dealer and purchase a genuine bulb, it's a grey fitting 1.2w (if memory serves me right), 3-4 quid methinks.
My Thanks to both posix & pchansen1 for your replies.
I will definitely purchase original MB bulb as replacement.
I am a relative newbie to the w140 and the knowledge on this forum is superb.
