Need Help! 1997 s600 transmission doesn't change the gears
Hi
Does anybody have an Idea what could be the problem?
I started my car yesterday, put the transmission into D , and then while I was driving the transmission didn't change the gears.
It stayed in the same gear . I think it was the 2nd gear.I kept on driving a few more minutes , but still no response.I started it again today and the transmission is still not working properly.
No response to kickdown ... , nothing .
I will bring it to the service at the weekend , but I'm curious what this could be.
If this happened to anybody before , please help me out with some info.
Thanks Dennis

Hi
So it looks and sounds like this.
I'm starting the engine.
The engine is running normally.
I put the shifter to D and As I accelerate from 1200Rpm the transmission just doesn't change the gear.
It stays in that gear till 5500rmp .Full throttle and no gear change.
I tried also the Kickdown , but nothing happens.
I tried to put shifter back to 1st gear manually ,because I think it stays in the 2nd gear, but still no response.
I think it is an electrical malfunction.
I will bring it to the service this weekend, and we will see what 's wrong .
I just wanted to know if somebody had this before , and how much this would be.
But anyway, I didn't have any problems with the car for the last almost 3 year. Just maintance, oil chages ,and a gasket change for the power steering.& I drove more than 60000 miles with my Baby.
I'm vey satisfied with the car .The most money I spent on it was for Rims , Body Kits , Engine Tuning...just for the fun.
Thanks D

Sounds like your car has gone into limp home mode. I might suggest posting your problem on mercedesshop.com. Go to tech help. They don't break down the forums by model number- just tech help. There's a couple master techs that regularly answer posts. They'll be able to provide a lot more insight than us DIY'ers. Make sure you post as much info about your car as possible- milage, last time the tranny fluid was changed, any lights that might be illuminated, etc..
Good luck!
Paul

RE: Need Help! 1997 s600 transmission doesn't change the gears
Hi Everybody
I just got my car back from the service this afternoon , and I was very happy.
The only problem was some malfunction in the electronic.
The guy reset the computer , and everything was all right.
Beside that the tranny oil and everything else was OK.
He told me it could have been some contact problem.
I had to pay him 12$!!!!
Can you beleive it??
He could have easily asked a lot more for this , I would never know what he had done ( I had bad experiance with extra charges at a MB Dealer before , so I know that kind of story).
Who else has a technician , who works on the car ( Checking the Computer, Tranny Oil, Test Drive...)and charges 12$
Thanks God for this Honest Guy!

Sportster: Well...that gives us all hope should our tranny go out (perish the thought). I'm glad you shared that problem with us. It is further proof of how much the computer has invaded the automobile world.[:)]
