RE: Slight bumping in the rear
Test the bump stop by putting it in a vise and winding it in and out and listen for the noise.. I doubt that you will hear any but worth a try...The point of the stop is to absorb the final compression.. and thats why it is metal to metal.. however it will transmit noise from the strut.. and the shell on top of the wheelarch will act like a soundboard.. thats why it is so loud...

As I was removing the bump stop, I heard The Noise. I feel very confidnet that the bump stop was my problem. Also, the threaded portion on top was slightly loose in the main body. That was probably causing the soft knocking noise. I picked up my parts yesterday. The new bump stop is on, but the live turned out to be the wrong one. Back to the dealer.

"Speed is just a question of money...how fast you wanna go?"
I picked up the correct line from the dealer at lunchtime today. I like this parts guy. He's giving me the parts for net instead of list, and the costs are very close to online prices. I'll see if I can't coerce some info out of him, like if my timing chain and guides were ever replaced! I would really be frustrated to tear it all down only to find out that it was done 20,000 miles ago. Anyway, I'll be on my back tonight taking a bath in self-levelling fluid. Man, I hate the smell of that stuff...
Well Merc600sec, you and I were correct. Not only was the bump stop rattling, but the strut is causing the creaking noise. I just love working on my back, getting hydraulic oil in my eye along with other crud, for what felt like 8 hours, only to find out I'll have to buy a strut after all. As we say in the aerospace field...CRAP! I did check the movement of the strut while it was out. It felt OK, but apparently that's not a good test. Oh well, at least I know exactly how to take this thing out now. I may post this adventure on the old website once I can get the strut fluid out of my hair...

RE: Slight bumping in the rear
The Starship goes in on tuesday..to the INDY guys near me.. to have a few niggles sorted...And the strut will be on the list.. They did the sump for me.. they took a couple of very blurry pics with my camera.. they dont like tecky stuff.. makes them nervouse..Having cat probs again... think I have blown the new one i fitted...
But, does a little creak here and there mean the strut needs replacement?
Just curious. Does the noise bother you that much? Or are you of the mindset that, hey, it's 10 years old, may as well replace it. I'd like to hear your thoughts.
RE: But, does a little creak here and there mean the strut needs replacement?
Brett, I can't stand squeaks, rattles, buzzes, etc. It just drives me nuts. I expect these types of noises (and can live with it) from my 1987 Olds Wagon, but not this car. The age of the part means nothing to me if it is performing as it should. I would be fine leaving it as it is if it were not making the noise.
Thanks. I've got a little creak from the rear that I've recently noticed
when driving slowly over speed bumps in parking lots. I'm not inclined to change anything at this point. Maybe I'll try squirting lubricant over all the bushings in the mean time.
RE: Thanks. I've got a little creak from the rear that I've recently noticed
My strut was creaking like an old wooden ship (as Merc600sec says[:)]) yesterday. It was very hot in Chicago, and the creaking gets worse in warm weather. As soon as I get my hands on one I'm going to change it.

I went over one of the 2,133,908 speed bumps in this city today, and got the infamous ADS caution light. It must be tied in with that creaking strut. I can't check the code(s) until I get my scanner back from being repaired.
