What can I expect?

Hi all,

I've just bought a 140-series S500, and can I say, what a smashing car! I've had experiences of plenty of other cars in the past, but none were quite like this. A veritable scorcher! It would seem in terms of expenses too.

My steering box has just gone - I've been told to expect a £650 bill. And that's for a reconditioned item! What more can I expect? I've heard the S500 is prone to a number of ailments. But nobody's actually told me what. Can anyone help me out? Mine's a 97 registered in 98 which I've been told makes me one of the luckier ones.

Anyway, I love the forum and am fascinated by all the other owners' experiences.

Take care,

(and please help me out here - I'd like to know what sort of a ride I'm in for!!)

Cheers all,

However, you will find lots of help ,(and other things) on here from those in the know..

Enjoy.. If you had the 600 well.....Even more expensive..

RE: What can I expect?

just to put my 2 cent in to the game. i had the same problem but it was a leak in my steering box which is a common problem for this vehicle, the dealer alone wanted close to 2000$ for the part alone. well to make a long story short i have a personal official MERC. mechanic who said that there is a small hose that leaks all the time on these vehicles no longer than an inch or two. low and behold that was the problem. cost me less than 200$ for the whole thing. so you might want to check that area out first before you drop any money into it. it may be a small problem. i hope this helps. drop me a response to let me know how it goes.

Had also the problem of leaking steering box. Local stealer quoted $ 2000 for reman one + work. The stealers do not repair anything any more, they just swap parts.

Local indy quoted $ 30 for seal kit + 1,5 hours work, said he has fixed hundreds of them, typical fault.

Still makes me smile when looking at the dry floor of my garage.

Advice: Find a good indy devoted to repair things, not just swap parts.

RE: What can I expect?

Stealer!! LOL You guys crack me up![:D][:D] Thanks for the tips - veeery useful. I got on the phone to the dealer I purchased the car from and apparently he had the steering box changed just before we bought the car. It looks like with your suggestions it could just be a seal/hose change job. But not to worry - there seems to be plenty of guarantee left for the unit so it should cover all aspects.

I drive quite enthusiastically - do you think this might have disturbed something in the steering box area.

thanks all,

take care
