What year and model is your W140? You could always buy a used one:

1996
Alternator
Mercedes S420 or S500
$150
Trolley Auto Parts
USA-CA(San-Diego)
1-619-234-4141

Regards,
Bryan

Bret:

I'm with you. I always use to rebuild my alternators. Now it is hard to come up with the brushs, bearings, diode trios, etc. The "rebuilders" keep those parts out of circulation. You can rebuild an alternator for under $25.00. That's a lot cheaper than $150.00 and you gain fun experience in the rebuild.

Yeah, I'm looking for a little adventure. Rebuilt one is $215 from

autohausaz.com with core exchange, but I'd like to try a rebuild on my own just for the hell of it (and to save a few bucks as a bonus). I just don't really know where to get the parts.

My car is making a somewhat embarrasing racket from the right side front of the engine where the alternator and secondary air pump are located (one on top of the other). I can't really tell which one is making the noise. Sounds like a bad bearing (like a ball bearing that has lost all its balls and the shaft is just rattling around). I thought I'd start with the alternator. The charging system is fine, however. Well, at least the charging system idiot light isn't on.

The brush assembly/voltage regulator is available as one asembly that is r&r'd with just two screws and costs about $40. It sounds as if you have bushing/bearing problems though.
