Vacuum Pump $$$

G'day all

Got a quote from Stealers here today for a new vacuum pump - A$2200 (about US$1600) plus install. I knew they were expensive but I think that is right over the top. Any alternatives out there for me? I'm not keen to take a second hand. Is it a large unit/easily shipped? Are they difficult to fit? Do they have to be MB? Please let me know if you can help.

cheers

Im led to believe that VW/AUDI do a similar one that does the same job for a fraction of the cost!Unfortunatly i don't have the details[;)]

They're on ebay occasionally from an online parts house.

Have you had a look at the pump yourself? Is it really dead? Maybe your true fault is somewhere else in the system.

RE: Vacuum Pump $$$

Which pump? The one behind the rear passenger seat or the one in the trunk?

RE: Vacuum Pump $$$

I paid $700 US for the vacuum pump that is under the right rear seat, and I'm sure the mechanic made a little on the part as well.

RE: Vacuum Pump $$$

Yes, the pump I refer to is the Vacuum pump under the rear seat which regulates the central locking, boot lock and reversing rods etc.

RE: Vacuum Pump $$$

Dingo:

I can tell you that they are definitely robbing you!! I replaced the vacuum assist pump on my 99 S500 for about $765.00(US) and I did it myself. It is quite an easy operation. Just make sure that you get the right pump number as there are different versions. I bought mine from Caliber Motors in Anaheim, CA and the phone Number is (800)252-6877 - I spoke with Dave (I believe...) They will ship anywhere. You MUST have the VIN number or this guy will chew your ass - he is a bit of a bore and a bump on a log, but they do have the best prices for a dealer and he is helpful if he is in the right state of mind that day. Do not forget your Credit Card - just buy it new and be done with it!

You will find the part # stamped on the unit - do not compromise on this and just get the right part. Make sure that you have a digital camera and take pictures before you remove the unit in order so that you can have a reference photo in case you forget where the vacuum hoses go to, OK!!. By the way, the electrical connection plug is quite unique just do not yank on it!! Study it carefully before unplugging... it has a form of a clip and a slide connector. Should be an easy job!! G'luck, mate and have a wonderful day.
