Tan foam in coolant tank of 500SEL

I recently went to check coolant in tank and found a tan colored foam around the lip of the opening. I reached down in the tank and found a peanut butter color film on the inner top of the tank. I wiped out what I could but I still need to know what caused the gunk.

Thank you

RE: Tan foam in coolant tank of 500SEL

oil causes that...possibly a blown head gasket, do a leak down test and a compression test to make sure

What colour is the rest of the water??.. was the engine hot? have you had any warning lights ? ???Possible indication of severe overheating -or-blown headgasket.. you need to run the engine and look to see if there are any bubbles appearing when warm.. geta tecky to look at it if in doubt..
