snow chain / traction switch

I can't turn this button off - it's to the right of the ashtray. I press it but the red light won't go off. It's making steering very tight and causing my 92 600SEL loss of power. This all started happening at the same time. I think it's also caused the ASR and ABS lights to stay on, which they do all of a sudden. Any ideas as to how I can turn the red light off the switch or otherwise to disengage? I'd be most grateful.

Dave, I don't think tight steering has anything to do with this button. You maybe lost power steering for some reason? Check the belt and steering fluid level.
ABS and ASR would lit for low battery voltage - another clue for the belt?

Thanks Mike for your help.

I really think that it's something electric. Oil levels look OK. Not sure how to access the belt. I have now noticed that neither the coolant temperature gauge nor the outside temperature readout work. Chaos!!

Sometimes, my ASR and ABS lights are on.
Then the steering is tight and my cruise control is inoperant.

Check for low battery voltage also. Could be a charging problem.
