The w202 is a nicer lookin car but the build quality is only 7/10 that of the 10/10 w140's. the w140 is ugly but what a ride. How you feel as a driver/ passenger is my priority. How it looks to others, well they still look is not important.
It's true what zeaq said, the w202 is a japanese design, there is no question about that!...to my opinion, the w140 is a nice looking body style compared to the w202, and not to say that the w202 shrunk in length and width on the interior spaces.

I'm lucky enough to have a W202 and a W140 and like them both! For zipping around town, the W202 has better economy, and is easier to park in tight spaces. For long trips, you cant beat the W140.
I think they're both similar shape (i.e square), the W202 is just smaller. I like the older square shape a lot - if you want japanese/ugly go look at a W203 or a W220!
Well guys I'm a little surprised but do understand you angle. Big cars in the Uk don't go down well so I think your views reflects the fact that big is the norm in the US. I still think the W140 is ugly but designed well, if you can marry the two. Still wax it like its a Ferrari though.

I love driving them both! I've had the W202 since new, and only had the W140 for about 4 or 5 months.
I dont think they're that different - the S class is a lot smoother etc, but you know you're driving a benz whichever one you drive - the controls are all the same etc. I guess the W140 has a better armchair.... [:D]

Just for the record, I'm in the UK and you're right of course, big cars arent the norm here! At least its always easy to see where you're parked though!!!
w140 vs w202 C-class or do you mean W140 vs. W220 S-class?
There seems to be some confusion here.
I had a 97 model W202 C280 before the W140. Great car for 3 years and 40000 miles. But, I can't imagine cross shopping the two completely different cars. Compact vs. full size luxury sedan. You buy one or the other for completely different reasons.
