Whining noise from a pump on left hand side of engine at front
I have a very strange whining noise coming from the top left (looking at the block from the front of car with bonnet up). It's to the top of the unit and is definitly breaking down. The whine has got worse this last two weeks. Actually only noticeable when in narrow streets, once on M way it's not audible. I have searched for a picture of the engine and components but have been unable to find one. One mechanic said it was the steering pump, I reckon it's not, as the steering reservoir is on the right hand side of the bay. Does any body on this forum know where I might a picture of the engine and can then self diagnose / search for replacement part.

Brett,
The site you recommended is fantastic. As I thought it is not the power steering pump, rather it's the 2nd alternator!! Why does a car need a 2nd alternator? Anyhow I've got the car booked in for Monday. saved a small fortune thanks to your advice. Many Thanks.
