Any help removing pin holding door check strap? I want to replace a loudly creaking check.
The pin holding the strap to the door pillar seems very tight. I can't push it up and out. I put a couple of socket extensions together and then used a socket on the end to hold the makeshift "ram" on the tapered bottom end of the pin and then hammered on it a few times from below the rocker panel. It didn't budge. I also tried to grip the top with vise-grips just to see if I could turn it to break it loose. Couldn't turn it. Any ideas? I don't want to scratch the paint. How do body shop guys deal with this?

Did you buy your new check straps yet? I replaced both of mine on my 190 and the pins had a clip on the bottom. When I look at the ones on my SLK, I didn't see the clip and it looks like it might come from the factory with the hinge attached. It looks like the pin is crimped on the bottom. So see if the new ones come with or without the hinge attached.

remove door liner.
Vapor seal on interior door panel
pull off in front area.
Seal (1) above bolt (3)
pull off.
Retainer (2) on bolt (3)
remove.
Bolt (3)
remove with special tool, avoid damaging paint.
Plastic washer (4)
remove (2 each).
Screws (5 and 6)
screw out (3 each), when installing tighten front screw first (10 Nm ).
Door retainer (7)
remove through installation opening in interior door panel, do not damage door.
Cover (8)
pull off of door retainer (7).
Door retainer (7)
lubricate by coating with MB-Lubricant Paste part no. 001 989 14 51, with brush before installing ball races.
Reinstall
in opposite order.
Vapor seal on interior door panel
glue on, replace vapor seal if damaged.

Looks like an AlldataDIY quote. I've got a subscription myself. I suppose I should look it up. I did refer to alldata to get the door panel off to have a look at my window, which wasn't going all the way down. While I was in there I thought I'd do the door check, too.
Yes, I did order one from Germanstar.net. Haven't received it, yet.
I'll be taking a good look at them, especially the old one to see if it really needed to be replaced. I want to know what produces the loud creak. I'm suspecting that it only need a healthy dose of lubricant. My previous '97 C-280 did this, too, but I never looked into it.
