RE: changing transmission oil on sel500
Yes drain the torque converter, and only use MB fluid coz mummy knows best.. you will need 9 liters. MB only sell it in 1 liter bottles..and when you take off the tray change the filter as well
got some pics in my gallery for you to look at if your interested.

The last response is incorrect. You do not have to drain the torque convertor and GM Dextron II can be used. The transmission requires nonsynthetic fluid and GM Dextron II is approved by Merceredes for use. Yes I have read the Mercedes technical publication that lists the approved transmission oil that can be used and list includes specific brands.
thanks guys.
will attempt to do it this weekend.
where is your gallery??,merc 600??
i think you have to drain the torque converter, cole 3986.
i used to have a mb diesel 300td and always drained the torque....most of the oil is there.
merc 600 one thing ....how do you fill the oil....thru the oil check tube...thats whaat i used to do.

RE: changing transmission oil on sel500
Just click my name and then click gallery- easy as..yes drain the converter because you will have at least 2 litres of dirty oil in there. I filled mine from the top of the tube with a funnel.. ran the motor after 5 liters to get it into the converter and then added the rest slowly cheking the dipstick there is an overflow piont on the top of the box.. .. Yes you can use other trans fluids if you wish,But MB trans fluid has a different makeup to others, and the price is not that different. Mummy knows best ...
hey,one question,is no way to check the transmision oil in a s600? because is no access to the transmision, manual say "go to the dealer", thank's for any aswer mark

Marco- What year is your S600, Later versions have a (sealed for life )different system Of which I have little experience but If you look from the front your Trans dipstick is on the left, by the front of your MAF box.. Funny sort of closeure system on top need to pull clip towards you before you can remove the dipstick..Oh and only check the level on flat ground with motor having run for at least 10 mins to get oil hot..If you need pics, will take some and post them for you .
Merc600 is completely wrong about the transmission fluid. NOT ONE MERCEDES DEALER WHERE I LIVE (THERE ARE THREE DEALERS) STOCK THE NONSYNTHETIC MERCCEDES BRAND TRANSMISSION FLUID). THEY ALL USE GM Dextron II. Yes there is a Mercedes part number so the fluid does exist and it is $ 15.00/liter- There is a huge difference in price- GM Dextron II is about $ 8.00/gallon. I bought a liter of the mecredes brand transmission fluid on line and it looks identical to GM Dexrtron II. Per conversations with Mercedes Tech's regarding this exact issue- the reason the dealers do not stock it is because it is the same fliud as GM Dextron II (no- I cannot guarantee that this is 100% true). Regarding draining the torgue convertor- if the fluid is clean- you are wasting your time draining the torgue convertor. The drain bolt on the torgue convertor is a pain in the ass to reach and if you cross thread it (yes I know someone who did- it has fine threads), you are screwed. The purpose of changing the fluid (as long as the fluid is clean) is to change the filter.
