I had my trunk apart this weekend, so while I had all the liners out, I took a look at the radio antenna since it had been said here by some that the antenna was for the phone only. That didn't seem to make sense. There is a silver box with two connectors labelled with phone and radio and a single connection labelled antenna that goes right to the antenna mast. The box is labelled telefon anpassgeraet (if I remember correctly). It seems clear to me from the electrical connections that the antenna is for both the radio and telephone. I'm guessing the box is a band pass filter for both radio and telephone frequencies.
RE: About the rear automatic antenna - radio or phone
It is really a splitter, if the antenna is a Tri- band antenna. Later models used in the bumper and in the glass antennas with the fender for "cell" only
My car is a 97 model. I'm not sure what you meant. That
the automatic antenna is only for the phone in later models? For my car I'd have to disagree, but I'd have to see a factory wiring diagram to be sure (or trace where the phone line from this box goes to see if it goes to another antenna or something.)

I also have a 1997 W140 and the antenna definitely is used by the radio, when the radio is turned on the antenna extends and when I turn it off the antenna retracts. (No more listening to the radio in the car wash) I am unsure if it is also used by the phone as I removed mine the other day.
RE: About the rear automatic antenna - radio or phone
well if its for the phone then.....why did my freinds w140 have the antenna and he didnt have the phone option? It went up and down when the radio was on or off.
