I have a real bad clunking noise coming from the drivers side rear on my 94 S 600 coupe. It sounds like a strut is way too stiff, the car has the Hydromatic suspension so I am having a tough time figuring it out. Has anyone ever encountered a problem like this? If so, please let me know.
Thank You

I had the same problem as you and I suffered with it for a long time. The clunking and thunking sounded as if it was coming from the rear leading you believe that there was something wrong in the rear end area (see my previous postings regarding this issue - do a "search" for my name and you'll read exactly what my complain was and the "proposed" repairs by an independent mechanic). Anyways, it is actually coming from the front end in your car, especifically, the front sway bar links. The passenger side sway bar link was replaced, and the noise went away!!!. Like you, I believed that it was the rear leveling system, but this was OK. If it was bad, the rear suspension would be very, very stiff; therefore, all is OK in the rear. The pressure reservoir spheres are OK as well - it is rare that these fail. Don't let them BS you!!!. I can tell you that if I would have followed the mechanics advised about repairing the rear suspension system, it would have cost me about $3500.00(+)! I am very fortunate that I have an extended warranty that covers this (GMAC - I bought the car from a Cadillac dealer)so I wasn't worried about the cost except for the $200 deductible. I was advised to take it to the dealer, and after about 5 days of diagnosing, they found the problem. Total cost: $248.00. Any more questions, please ask me. By the way, if you shake the car from side-to-side (not up and down) does it still make that noise?? That is shaking the car much in the same way that a fish swims -rear end goes from right to left- the noise can be replicated this way, do you understand what I mean?? Try it - see what happens. I'll try to take a picture of this link this weekend and I'll post it, OK? Let me know how it went.
