The sunroof on my dads 96 S320 seems to have some sort of rubbery sticky material that is stuck in the area where the sunroof retracts to when it is opened. I think this may be some sort of seal that had "decomposed" and is breaking apart. It left a nasty black smear on the glass portion of the sunroof and also on the sunscreen that pulls out underneath it. My dad is kind of irritated now at the car as it was sold to us a lemon and we now have over 3k in repairs into it. The sunroof functions fine however this material is starting to become a BIG problem. How can I remove it or fix it?Please help?
Common problem. There is some insulation material, cardboard like, that is glued
in place I think to the underside of the metal roof of the car. This material comes loose then catches on the sunroof and gets broken up as the sunroof retracts. The black goo is the glue that used to hold it in place. As I understand, some just pull out the bits of insulation material and don't worry about replacing it. My car has this issue, too. I'll probably replace the insulation eventually.
OK - now I too have this very problem. I had as good-a-look as I could with my mighty Mag Light, but I can't see how to correct this intriguing challenge, without major W140 surgery.
There seems to be alot of this goop (glue?) that is exposing itself to the top-side of the sunroof every time it is opened then closed. Has anyone figured out a way to correct this messy issue ?
Fortunately, Windex does remove this goop from the glass, but who wants to always be doing that... ? I'm open to any & all tips-!
Same problem for me, although mine's a steel retracting and tilting roof. I spotted about 5 gluey streaks on the outside of the roof after it had been fully opened.
I gave it a good rub off using a clay bar followed with a polish and wax. I've decided to keep the sunroof closed until I can figure out what's happening. Any ideas would indeed be helpful.
My friends, look no further, for I have been down that road. I had to completely remove the ceiling, then sunroof-pan, and saw what was causing the problem. It's a dampening material MB glued onto the underside of the roof to absorb sound and anything else that hits the roof. The stuff is about 1/8 of an inche thick and about 8"x24" across. This stuff must have been the idea of the same guy that came up with the BIO Degradable wiring in the engine compartment. I just thought of somehting...the testing of these cars must have tested in an are of the world where outside temperature must not get above 50 degrees farenheit. Because here in Texas that tar crap on your roof falls right off in 100 degree temperature, which means your roof is about 150 degree when touched. and you can cook an egg on your roof in the summer!! Now my friends lets resolve your problems, it ain't easy. There's no way you can remove the rest of that stuff without removing everything under your roof which is almost half of your interior. Shoot me an email or somehting and I can give you details if you're up to the job.
Same issues here. I was thinking maybe a good polishing and waxing of the sunroof panel would prevent the goo from sticking to it? I am not too fond of the idea of removing the ceiling of my car as it's soft nubuck leather and staining is just too easy with this stuff...
Same thing. After pulling out several broken chunks of the insulation
material and cleaning gooey streaks off the sunroof for a few months, it all stopped. No more goo, no more chunks emerging as I closed the sunroof. I haven't messed with it since.
