Not very exciting one this, but I have been getting vibrations in my steering wheel between 50-60mph. I got the tracking and wheel balancing done, but I'm still getting this "twitching" in the steering. It's really noticable if I let go of the steering.
The front tyres are worm unevenly as the tracking was originally way off. Could it be a lingering effect of the uneven tyres?
did you get 'tracking' done or proper 4 wheel 'geo check' or geometry check. these cars are v sensitive to alignment - its not just the tracking (in / out of the front wheels) but also the caster / camber etc of all four wheels that needs doing.
theres a BIG difference (jn price as well... [:(] ) between 4 wheel alignment / tracking and a geo check (100+ quid)
could also be the steering damper (easy replacement)
but v likely to just be residual from knackered tyres.

RE: Vibrations in steering wheel
Not a sensible thing to do, see if they settle down . your steering damper might be shot, they are quite cheap and easy to fit. try changeing your wheels right front to back left and left front to back right see if it helps, otherwise is going to be replace the damper first then other parts

Hi,
Strange i got exactly the same thing right around the 56-58mph range.
Got new tyres n balanced, not tried wheel alignment though.
Could it not be bushes as well?

RE: Vibrations in steering wheel
The easiest way to check is with a Magnetic Dial Guage.. mount it in the wing above the wheel , with the front elevated , check to see if you have any run out.. then with it on the floor roll it back and forth one +half a revolutions any deviation will indicate you have a prob
Right, well, I got some new tyres put on the front, rebalanced etc, but still getting the vibrations. If anything they're worse now (probably due to more tread?)
Time to check the bushes/damper etc I think. I'm out of ideas otherwise!
I was having this same nagging problem with my 98 S500. On brand new tires, I took them back and had them rotated and re-balanced, but steering wheel shimmy did not go away.
I took it back to the tire shop once again, this time they "load balanced" all 4 wheels/tires. Apparently the 2 back tires were poorly mis-matched to the wheels, where the tire needed to be rotated on the wheel about 90deg or so.
A re-check after adjustment gave a much better balance figure, and I've been testing it over the last few days. I'm afraid it did not fully go away however, but it is much better.
I'm off to the parts dept for a steering damner (shock absorber), the local dealer wants $65.00(us) for one. I've seen them online for $35 or so, but must add shipping of course...
If anyone is interested... Just got car back from Merc specialist, and it was the anti roll-bar rods. The connections were worn. Also the front brakes were sticking. Drives much better now.
I'm so pleased I found a specialist rather than using the Mercedes shop! Didn't cost much to fix.
