I saw this car up for sale, and was wondering what chassis this is. It sure looks like my Dad's W140 S-Class, but it is listed as a 1987 . . . I am in the area today, so I am going to check it out just for fun. Who knows, if it is a wicked car, I might end up selling my ES300 and buying this [:)]
If anyone can shed some light, please do [:)]

I think you might have found that elusive W140, however, after the onset of euphoria has died down in you, do the following:
1. Express interest in buying the car
2. Get the Car VIN and pay your $25 for a carfax report. Study this report carefully.
- how many owners
- look for consistent mileage records
- any accidents? Was this a salvage car?
- Was this car in a flood?
- and what else?
2. If the carfax was good, then the next step is to find a good MB mechanic to do an Inspection. Get an estimate for fixing all the problems that was uncovered during the inspection.
Read the inspection report and the list of things wrong. Think about what you think you can live with, without fixing it. Now you are ready to make an inform choice on purchasing the car.
Funny you should mention all of that. I almost got my brother-in-law to purchase a '95 C280 today. We put a small downpayment down yesterday, and then took the VIN# to get the car checked out. Turns out that it had switched ownership 10 times already and was salvaged back in 1999!! We are definitely getting our downpayment back [:)]
As for this car, if it is a W140, it is way too good to be true. My brother-in-law and I are going out car shopping tonight anyways, so we're going to rop in just to ake a peek [:)]
Who knows . . . God could be smiling on me today [:)]
Yeah, I checked it out and without any surprise, the picture in the ad was just wrong
It was indeed a 1987 300D (still a decent car, but not an amazing price).
I was in the area so I thought I would take a look just for fun. I can always dream of finding such an amazing deal [:)]

Ok, here's an idea.
You've already registered with Carfax. That's great. Hopefully you got the unlimited use for 30 days subscription. If you did, then you can do this.
1. Find a VIN # for a W140 that you like. Any VIN.
2. Search it in Carfax.
3. In the listing, look for a button that will give you ALL the W140 that is selling in your area.
That's how I found my 93 400 SEL. It was in mint condition---almost showroom. It was a no brainer to buy the beast. Maybe it'll work for you too.
