Thinking of buying an S500

A friend of mine wants to buy a 1998 S500 with 40k miles for US$30000. I've heard they had some problems. Any advice would be appreciated.

RE: Thinking of buying an S500

the problems were the pre-96 ones really...

just check everything (esp vacuum systems) work - check them several times (see posts about vaccum pumps working twice)

air con MUST work - scary if it is the condensor - but unlikey on a 98.

30K sounds very high though..

these cars have those evaporator problems and you said the air cond MUST work......this is just a luxury item and yeah its nice to have but if you can put up without it you would save $$$ in the repair. Depends where you live though. Am I right or is this a must repair?

RE: Thinking of buying an S500

Is your friend buying from a dealership or a private party? Does it come with a warranty? IMHO, I'd only buy a used S500 or any MB with a Starmark warranty. Here are just some of the issues I've dealt with since January 2004 on a 1997 S500. It had 49k miles on it.

RE: Thinking of buying an S500

I bought a 1999 S320LWB two months ago from a dealer. Car has 50,000 miles and I knew better than to buy this car without the Starmark Warranty. Car runs like a dream, however, like anything with electronics problems are subject to arise. I took it into the dealer for a faulty automatic door pump. Because I have the warranty, the dealer gave me a rental car, and fixed the problem free of charge. There's alot to say for the times you show up at the dealer and drive off without pulling out your check book. The part and labor was $900 if I didn't have the Starkmark warranty. So basically, I've already made my money back in less than two months. Do not buy without the warranty unless you love to spend money unneccessarily.

My friend bought the car a few days ago (without warranty), and he is aware of the popential repair costs.

RE: Thinking of buying an S500

it's a matter of preference. the warranty companies have done major research and discovered things don't break as often as one might think. you guys are the exceptions, not the rule. why would they go into business offering warranties if the payout was greater.
