My passenger door close assist failed last week, I tried the fuse trick and it now works fine. I then called the guy who rebuilds the pumps (I found him somewhere on this board) and tried to order a new pump. He told me that if the fuse trick works it's not the pump. It's the closing mechanism in the door getting too stiff which tells the computer in the pump that it is taking too much force to close the door and it needs to shut down to protect the pump from an overload. I was told to take the door apart and clean and lubricate the closing mechanism.
I haven't had a chance yet but it sure beats a new pump.
Is it a hydraulic type Door ?
If yes some time the modulator of it get current over load. I'm not sure . Please inform me . if the when you take the door apart and clean and lubricate the closing mechanism, ( the result )
My experience exactly. Read my previous post for more details.
I'm still working on getting my system fully functional. Need some air line connectors. Who knows how many years the system in my car has been non-functional.
To split hairs, I found that the actual closing action is mediated by positive pressure (not vacuum). I suppose vacuum sounds right because the doors and trunk appear to "suck" shut. :) But, it's air pressure from the pump that actuates pistons that exert the mechanical force.
During a trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico in July, 2003, the doors on our 1993 600 SEL stopped pulling closed, one at a time, over a period of four days.
We called our senior MB technician in Oklahoma City. He said to pull Fuse #9 (Trunk, Right Side) and wait about 3 minutes, which we did. The fuse was then returned to its slot.
The door closing mechanism was working perfectly prior to that experience and has been working perfectly since then.
