If anyone is interested, here are the production numbers when the W140 was first being built in 1990. The month is when the model started production.
300 SD- ?
350 SD- 3 SEPTEMBER
300 SE- 29 MARCH
300 SEL-27 MARCH
300 SE 2.8- 9 DECEMBER[debuted in 1992, why didn't they call it a 280 SE???? Later name changed to S280]
400 SE- 10 AUGUST
400 SEL-11 JUNE
500 SE- 20 MARCH
500 SEL-40 MARCH
600 SE- 3 OCTOBER
600 SEL-25 MAY
Note: I'm confused between the 300 SD and 350 SD, I know they made a w140 300 SD but my book does not list it, they only list a w140 350 SD. I don't think they made a w140 350 SD. It is probably a miss print, so the figure showing 3 for the 350 SD is probably really for the 300 SD.
Anyway to get the number of cars produced for each? And what about the places that got these wonderful cars? (eg. xx - Americas xx - Britian xx - Germany, etc)
I have an awesome book that I think is out of print, Mercedes-Benz Production Models Book 1946-1995 by W. Robert Nitske tells me everything. It only lists prices in Germany[DM] and U.S.[$], so it dosen't tell me exactly what particular places got the cars, however I can easily tell what is U.S. market and what is Euro market. I do know that the U.S. market did not get the w140 300 SE 2.8, 300 SEL, 500 SE, and 600 SE. ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AGAIN! A w140 500 SE and 600 SE would have been so sweet!
