Here is part of a post that I posted on the 126 and General MB forums.. this piece applies to your "expertise". I have been searching for a 300 SDL or 350 SDL W126 body MB, but as the story reads.. I do like the 140s. Should I know anything in particular if I do go with one. Thanks
Raf.
By total accident I found a Rolls Royce/Bentley/ MB auto body shop by work, so I stopped in and chatted with the manager. (I was hoping he had a lead to a great W126 or something..he didn't) What did happen, I noticed the W140 body style... wow!! He didn't know much about them other than fixing the body work and just kept saying, "They are nice!". Gee thanks! So... does anybody have any inside information about this body style?
I found out the basics:
six cylinder diesel (is it a turbo diesel?), rear wheel drive, and I could only find info on a 300 SD model, no SDLs.. are they not available in these models?
Well check this out... by total accident I found a 1992 Charcoal with brown/ orange interior (kind of a pumpkin color look) 300 SD with 140,000 miles. The seller is asking $12,500 US, but is open for negotiations. Is this a good purchase? Are there any "gremlins" that I should be aware of? Is this the same six cylinder as in the 91 350 SDL? Should I stay away????
Regardless of the W140 you purchase, make certain it has a full record of service and repair, and that it has been serviced and maintained according to MB.
One you locate it and purchase it, continue the same treatment and you will enjoy this fine automobile for years to come.
you have never seen a 140???? are you blind?? [:)]
have you seen the coupe version?
look out for leaking air con (new condensor - dashboard out job - thousands to fix) on early ones.
Well, I'm sure I have "seen" them prior to a couple of weeks, but never in a "buyers' light.
I could have never afforded one, I guess I'm starting to become an adult....OH NOOO!!!!
How do I "investigate" this leaking Air Conditioner problem?
Yeah, the bad thing is that not everyone understands how important the keeping of receipts plays a role in the whole "up keep" of the vehicle. This one really doesn't have a history, thus my "ify-ness" on purchasing. Thanks.
1) turn on air con at full blast
2) replace toupe / wig back on head after it has been blown off.....
3) do you freeze?
ask when the air con was last charged - if less than 1 year ago - walk. if no cold air - walk. take to a good indy air con shop and ask them to have a look for leaks?
pollen filters often get neglected - mine was disgusting even after full mb sh... thus no air flow
Hi, We have both 1991 350 sd (126) and 1993 300SD (140). They both have the same turbo engines. The 140 body has a slightly higher gear ratio compared to the 126. Theres ALOT more features and electronics that can and do go bad on the 140. They are tottaly different cars other then the powertrain. The sound system on the 140 is better then the 126. Our 1991 350 is prestine and for sell with 79,100 Mi.
This is a turbo diesel one (177 bhp) and more than 33 m.kg Torque.
This is not the 3,5 liter engine but the 3L 24V.
I've chose this one to carry two horses sometimes.
I know this engine for it's the atmospheric one (12v) that is about 500.000 miles old on my W124.
In one word if you have to choose an diesel engine, you'd better avoid this 3.5 liter version for it is known having problems at about 100.000 miles, has an only 4 speed gearbox, and delivers about 150bhp.
Hope it helps.
