According to my owner's manual, page 10 - item # 24 "Activated charcoal filter switch"
Now that brings up other related questions:
1. Where is the charcoal filter located
2. How do we change it
3. Other then the MB dealership, where can we get replacements (or, I imagine we can rebuild the existing filter).
The activated charcoal filter is in the heater cavity. It takes the dealer about 3hrs to replace it, the windshield wiper motor and gear train have to be removed to get access to it, I think it is a few hundred dollars, the upper one is easier to replace, by removing the top of the heater box!
Since we're on the subject of charcoal activated filters
I've read that MB suggests replacing the activated charcoal filters every 45,000 miles, with replacement cost ranging between US$400-$500. So, short of pulling apart the car, how would I know IF these filters were every changed with the "Starmark Certification" process?
Is there a certain smell or lack of smell to tell me the system is working properly? I've read that 85% of cars with filters require changing? -LOL-
Has anyone recently had experience checking or replacing these charcoal activated filters? Thanks in advance for your time, reply & insight...

I don't think that I have that option in my '93 300SE; however, even if I did have the charcoal filter, I don't think I would spend $400-$500US to replace it. That's too much money for such a small feature . . . but that's just my opinion . . . other people may feel otherwise . . .

RE: Does anyone know what this button is??
My 140 is the ONLY car i have ever driven with aircon that doesnt give me redeye, this is down to the pollen-active charcoal filter. Easy to compare with my Audi 2,8 quatro and my Toyota GT4 without it.

On early W140s, only 500SEC/SEL and 600SEC/SEL has Active Charcoal Filter std.... It's optional on 300/400... ACF equipped W140 has "grill" or "slots" on the hood, near the wipers....
However, later W140s(1997+) have ACF std....
