When you go to close the trunk door on the car, the automatic closer that sucks the door closed does not seem to do pull it shut all the way. It is not in line with the sides of the car and sticks up higher. The motor works fine but it just seems like it is not closing all the way. Is it supposed to do this or am I paranoid?
-thanks!!

a common problem. usually fixed by repositioning and tightening the trunk latch. it is not the latch on the trunk lid, it is the lower latch on the body itself. you have to take of the covering panels and use a torq wrench to re tighten the latch.

It may take several attempts to adjust the latch. Be sure the position of the latch is not restricting movement of the linkage. It may not be pulling the latch up all the way.
Close the catch manually on the body (bottom lip) by rotating. If the striker in the lid retracts, check the bolts holding the lower catch. The bolts have a habit of coming loose, you can check it easily. If the rubber bumpers have not been moved dont mess with them. When the pump fails, the stiker in the lid does not retract. If the bolts are loose be happy!
Rememer to open the trunk to release the lower latch, otherwise you wont be able to close it.
"The trunk lid on my 1996 S320 ceased closing all the way, the handle retacted normally but the lid itself was not being pulled tightly shut. In the trunk I pulled fuse number 9, waited 30 seconds and then re-installed the fuse. Trunk lid is now operating perfectly. I will post again if this proves to be only a temporary fix."
That was my post that day. The next day, the problem reoccured and I again reset the fuse. The trunk has operated perfectly since then, over 5 months.
Question for all of you. I have a 1994 S420. When the trunk is closed and I push the trunk release button the handle above the license plate flips out. When I close the trunk the handle flips back in just fine. I never knew that the trunk lid actually automatically drew down. I've always firmly (but lovingly) slammed the trunk lid to get it to latch. Is there actually a draw-down mechanism in a 1994 S420? Thank you.
Yes, if you rotate the lower catch to the lock position the upper striker should pull in. The handle typically was driven off the locking pump under the seat, while "pull in" for the doors and trunk lid is driven of the closing pump over the rear wheel, next to the gas tank. This pump fails quite often and exhibits itself as doors or the lid not pulling in. The fuse trick usually does not last. In 95 or so there was a service bulletin to tie the pull down and pull in of the handle to the same vacuum source which is the "closing pump" If you search on "closing assist" you will find ample information to keep you busy. You should not have to slam it. I am on my second pump, one in 95 and again in 03, and also have had the screws on the lower lock loosen. There have been some posts about adjusting the top, but I dont quite accept that as a normal problem.
