I have an infrared flip key for my 92 500 SEL that no longer functions, even after new batteries. When depressed for several seconds the builtin visible operational led does not work. Does anyone know if transmitters from the later year cars will work on the 92 or are they year specific? There are always several on Ebay for $20-$30.
I had similar problem. My mechanic traced it to a loose ground wire in rear-view mirror/remote eye assembly. Tough to find the problem, but a very easy fix once it was found. Infrared remote now works like a charm. Good luck.
I have not yet found info on interchangeability but will post if I do. The lose ground sounds interesting but I think my remote is bad. In addition to the infrared led that transmits the code there is also a visible red led that illuminates if you hold the button for several seconds to let you know if the batteries are good. That doesn't work on mine.
Does your other remote work? I left mine in my jeans and it went thru the washer, the red light did not come on when holding the button. I decided what the heck, and popped the two halves apart, corrosion! I cleaned the board with alchohol, got batteries, put together and got light.
Re-sync is covered in the manual, something like "aim remote, push button, and unlock door with key" it worked!
My 92 had the square remotes( one got lost), I odered a $140 replacement and it came with the key but this one is smaller and has a loop for a key ring, ordered another!
I have been told that they are coded to the car, but have not been able to verify. i dont know how many variations there are, but there was a number stamped on the cicuit board.
