Thinking of guying a '92 600 SEL - Advice Please
Hi all,
I'm thinking of getting a ,92 600 SEL with 94.5K on the clock.
Can anyone tell me if there are any specific things I should be looking out for that may be ready to cost serious money on it.
It seemed very smart during the brief look at it I got today but there are one or two points that need attention. There is a small ammount of bubbly paint along the bottom edge of the boot lid. If I had to go the whole way and buy a new boot lid, get it sprayed and fitted what sort of money am I looking at?
The rear window is de-laminating slightly in the corners. Is this likely to continue and wreck the entire screen? If so what sort of price is a new one to have fitted?
The rear bumper has a small hole through the plastic. If I need to have the bumper stripped, the hole filled and then resprayed how much am I looking at?
Anything at all that anyone feels may also need looking at is welcome.
Asking price is £8,995UK, is this reasonable given the points above? Should I be arguing it down a lot?

Hi Johnathan, i'm in the UK as well, and we've just brought a 98 S600L.
Apparently, the condenser in the aircon can be problematic, costing aroung £2000 to fix, but i'm not sure if this affects us in colder England.
Also, check that all the self closing door + boot (trunk) aids are working, otherwise you may need a new vaccumm pump (£400). The wiring harness can also be a problem on the earlier models (around 1992), so try to get it with an RAC extended warranty for example.
The engine itself is pretty sound, just make sure all the electronic gizmos work properly. The price seems OK for that milage and age, but try to haggle them down.
Make sure you have a FULL MB SERVICE HISTORY, otherwise, you could be in big trouble. If it doesn't have one walk away, there are quite a few for sale every couple of weeks at www.autotrader.co.uk.

Service history.
Cheers for the info,
The car has a MB service history up until around 75K, Merc specialists therafter. Having said that, my current '89 500SEC, that I bought with 105K on, only had a Merc history up until about 80'ish anf hasn't given too many problems.

I just purchased a 92 600 SEL with 45K original milage. I found out the A/C evaperator is bad. The reverse is going out slowly. Can't go in reverse on an upgrade. My mechanic told me these are typical for the 600 SEL. Good Luck. I still love my MB.

The small bubbly is an easy fix, they sandblasted mine, and painted the corner, you cant tell. Agood body shop can mix the paint to compensate the aging. You should have the bumper done at the same time. There is no need to replace the lid unless it is rusted thru and that can be fixed. 1) evaporator $4000, 2) closing assist $600 3) Bose audio amp $600 4)motor mounts, suspension parts, lower hydraulic bushings (common
