HELP! Oil Pressure Question...Loss of Power? 82' 300SD

I have an 82' 300SD, 5CYL, Turbo, 175,000 Miles. At idle my oil pressure reads above mid-range....as soon as i start accelerating my oil pressure guage pegs out high. My power seems very low from the start but appears normal at highway speed. I've also noticed what i think is exhaust smoke when i pull my breather hose (valve cover to air cleaner) off while running. Additionally, it seems like oil is being forced out around the seal on the oil filler cap on top of the valve cover. I was thinking the EGR was sticking??? Any suggestions?

This is normal; see owner's manual.

Turbo lag.

This is blow-by from the engine; again, this is normal for these cars. However, it should not be to the point where it's pushing up the oil dip stick. A little bit of oil leaking past your oil filler cap is typical. (or so I have been told) You can always try a replacement cap - it should not be too expensive.

Hope this was helpful.

i agree - that's normal. There are some manuals you can get if you're a do it yourself person that will let you optimize the performance, but unless you get radical you won't win many drag races with your diesel. http://www.mercedessource.com/ has some manuals on 'performance tuning" and I've had some of it done- it really amounts to getting the best out of what you've got. Not at all like hot rodding a '65 GTO while lisstening to the beach Boys..........
