Some Interesting 420 SEL Observations

Well, I've had my 420 for close to a year now and I am slowly learning some of it's quirks. Though I would share some of the more interesting observations.

First gear start----Did you know that when the AC is on it always starts in 1st? Otherwise it's starts in 2nd unless you punch the pedal then it is a 1st gear start again.

The AC, even with 134 keeps the car cool in Tucson when it's 110+ outside.

The artic white paint NEVER gets hot to the touch even in a blazing sun.

It passed emission testing with the air pump sans a belt. Not only passed but the readings were only about 25% of the max..

I drive a lot of differant cars compliments of Mr. Hertz. Including Volo S80's (or something like that), Jag S-types, and etc. None of them is a quiet on the highway as this 420. I measure this by how much volume I have to add on the radio or how easy it is to carry on a conversation. Also, the 420 doesn't give be butt cramps.

178,000 miles now and not a drop of oil is consumed, hwy milage is ~20 at 85 mph with AC and 22 without. Oil pressure never drops below 3 bar (except at idle) and temp. never gets above 100 (usaully at 85 to 90 on a hot day).

I think it's a keeper.

Re: Some Interesting 420 SEL Observations

Hello Litton:

Very pleased to hear that you've got a "keeper"! I think my '89 560SEL is one, too.

A quick question about your no-oil burning: have you had your valve seals done yet? My car has no drips from anywhere, perfect smog checks, no engine leaks, but the oil consumption is creaping up a bit. Only thing left to do is check valve seals. Curious if you've had anything like that done yet. (Or perhaps the PO, etc.)

Thanks in advance!

Cordially,
OneTwoSix

The only engine work I've done was to replace all the vacuum lines. If the valve seals were done before I got the car, I couldn't say. I dropped ~2,000 in repairs but most of that was pulling the dash and replacing all the climate control valves. The rest was misc stuff like cruise control modules and new aux fans. The power steerinmg pump had a slight drip but it went away all by itself once the car started to be used again.

Litton, OneTwoSix,
That was news to me re: a/c on = 1st gear start. My 88 420 has ~159,000 and NO OIL consumption, but I had valve stemp seals and timing chain/guides done under hood when purchasing this car 30k miles ago.
~17.2 around town, 21+ hwy. My favorite car EVER.
