Oil Pressure Gauge

Regarding W126 1989 420 SEL w/ 133k mi

After a recent oil change, I've noticed that my oil pressure gauge will fluctuate a lot when idling (Between 1-3), where it never used to. OP goes to directly 3 when accelerator depressed and car seems to run fine.

One thing I thought was that the shop used 15W-40 Oil rather than 10W-30 as usual and I didn't notice until I got home. Could this changed have caused this effect due to higher vicosity affecting the sending unit? Any other bad effects from this difference?

I use Castrol GTX 20W-50

The MB shop also recommended this oil. It's been serving me well so far.

My oil press gauge does vary from 1.5-2.5 at idle and stays pegged at 3+ when in motion.

I have the same thing. Keep an eye out on the tachometer. When the RPMS drop to 500 or so, so will the pressure guage. Press the accelerator lightly to 700 or so and you'll see it rise too. To me it sounds like the idle control valve. I have to clean mine too.

Oil Pressure Gauge Clarification

Thanks for the responses. Just to clarify, I am not worried about the pressure falling to 1 or 2, but the fact that the gauge needle is fluctuating wildly in this area when at idle at 500 rpm or so. It definitely shoots back up to 3 and pegs when I accelerate.

Are you suggesting that cleaning the idle control value will eliminate this? Is this a simple job? If what recommended solvents are used. Sorry for the 'newbie' questions, I am NOT a master mechanic! :-)

It could. All you want to do is to remove the carbon built up inside the valve. I have yet to do it on my W126 ...(done it on my VW's) and it helped. As for cleaner, I used gasoline, but I think you're supposed to used break cleaner.....Simple procedure though.
