My 560's engine run around between the 80 line and the next most of the time. If I got stuck in traffic and it would go up alittle and then when I was moving and of course, the faster I went, the faster it cooled off. My guess it has a lot to depend on outside temp. Anyone?

about the same here

When living in the Northern California bay area where average temps reached between mid60s to 70s, my needle sat about a mm above the 80 mark. a little more when idling at a stop light but down when in motion.

I am now in Los Angeles and the temps have been in the high 80s, low-mid 90s. My needle is usually right in between the 80 and first paint mark above that even when moving. It does reach the paint mark when standing sometimes. I've checked the coolant (it's about 6 months old), oil level, and thermostat seems to be working. Car runs ok.

I think it can feel more ennerving to see that needle move a lot because these cars seem to have a "real" temp gauge that shows you what's going on with the engine temps as opposed to modern cars that have a "simulated" temp gauge that actually have only 2 settings: "normal" and "it's too late you've overheated your engine already"

I think I'd worry if the needle stayed close or passed the paint mark above the 80 mark on a prolongued basis.

You may need a new thermostat. Is your coolamt mixture too strong on antifreeze? 50/50 works best for freeze protection and engine cooling efficiency. High concentrations of antifreeze in the coolant does not cool as efficient as that with the proper mix. When was the last time your coolant was changed?
Mine runs right where it should (just below the 80 c mark)right about 75 C. It will climb to 90 C if I am driving it hard up some of the canyon roads on a very hot day (95 + F)with the A/C running.

Agree with you.
Anyway mine is normally around 80C in normal driving and will easily go to a little over 100C in the hot traffic of Bangkok (over 100F temp and 5 miles/hour speed)
