I've seen posts here that say a harsh or lumpy gear change can be down to a worn-put transmission modulator unit. Can anyone tell me where this can be found, what it looks like, how much it costs and how easy it is to change?
It's on the the drivers side of the tranny (I think that will be correct, as its on the passenger side on U.K. right hand drive models), just above the sump pan.
It is circular in shape, has a vacuum pipe running from it up to the inlet manifold. It is made of plastic and will be either Green, Red or I think the third colour is black.
It think they are easy to replace, but can't describe how to do it because it's been a long time since i last replaced one. Once replaced, have the tranny pressures adjusted as it is this valve that has to be adjusted to amend the pressures and if they're not right, changes could be harsh or gears could slip.

spanners got it right
as he said, the swap is an easy one, but it's just as well to have your shop do the hole job, cuz that benz won't be rolling until you have the pressure correct!
It's a quick swap - have them change your tranny oil and filter at the same time... smooth!
The colours indicate the generation vacume modelator, so that should be enough to get what you need. They all come with pluss parts, so if your Benz is old, NP. The price @ hole sale is about $35... so what ever your vender's making, you figure!
The reason I ask is that searching the previous posts I noticed that someone mentioned that bad changes were sometimes down to this unit becoming worn. Also, what I forget to mention, was that under heavy acceleration from a stand-still you I get a sort of rasping sound that seems to be eminating from beneath the car, sort of behind where the radio sits, presumably this component may produce this type of sound if shot?
The rasping sound won't be the modulator, even when faulty, it doesn't make an audible sound.
How loud is the sound? Does it sound like a vacuum noise or is it heavier?
Don't know as I don't really know what to compare it to. Only seems to occur when pulling away hard from a stand-still, sort of a sucking type sound - similar to sucking on a straw in an almost empty cup - but deeper, dosen't last long. I thought it may have ben an exhaust gasket or joint but it's too specific in when it happens and it hasn't got worse, even though it's been doing it a ages. Oh-well, I'm gonna get the modulator changed anyway and see what happens.
