Thinking of buying a 350 SDL...

I currently drive a GMC Yukon and am thinking of trading it for a 350 SDL (I've seen 1987-91 models). Looking for lower monthly payments, but still want a sweet ride.

I love the SDL look, ride, and the sound & smell of diesel! However, don't know much else. Is there anything I should be looking for? Would this be a good trade [?]

Regardless of what people may say about the diesel engines, they're very reliable. I've had my 1990 Mercedes 350SDL for a year now. I must say I've travelled many places and yet haven't broken down on the side of the road yet. I love my car, but I'd rather you not make a even trade for one of those 350SDLs. Sell your Yukon then buy a 350SDL, saves you money...

350 SDL?

Heard some problems with the in line 6 turbo diesel. I bought a 1983 300SD with 80,000 miles on it and it has the 5 cyl. turbo diesel and no problems at all. A great choice since I too wanted a 1991 350 SDL but heard to many problems with it, however the guy that did buy the 350 SDL had lots of problems with it and im glad I bought the 83. do check out what others say about the 350 SDL and issues regarding that model, then base it on info here on the forum. My choice would be to find a 300SD or 300SDL 5 cyl. hope all goes well....T

....And in the year 2008 Mercedes goes on arming - then the V-superdiesel with ten cylinders and around 500 hp will come........

I heard the same here. I bought a 300SD (5-cyl Turbo) Much more reliable and plentiful if something does go wrong.

Some 350 engines are good, and some are bad. The only way to know for sure is to make certain the engine has been replaced by the dealer.

I have seen original engines in excess of 200K miles, though, and it baffles me(maybe the rods for those were manufactured somewhere else?).

Compromise between the 300SD and the 350SDL and get a nice clean 300SDL(1986-1987). They'll last just as long as the 5-cylinder, and you won't have to adjust the valves every 15 - 30K miles[:D]. Although the 350's are nice, they are very rare, and they also rarely have the engine upgraded. Good luck,

*The 350SDL is geared for torque, thus acceleration.

*The 300SDL is geared for horsepower, thus topspeed.

*The 300SD will never leave you stranded. It is the simplest, and least expensive to maintain if something became amiss, thus simplicity(EVERYTHING'S MECHANICAL).

It's your call, good luck
