Hi folks, The Mrs. just called to inform me the 1991 300SE died at a stop. Battery too weak to crank. Jumped it and it started, ran OK for about 5-6 minutes while I applied a load -AC, lights, defroster. After about 7 minutes dash lights started coming on and engine idle started falling. Tach and speedo needles started jumping around too. The batt is 12 months old, alternator is at least 3 years old. The speedo and tach needled jumping has me puzzled. Anyone have experience with these type of symptoms?

I sure wish that people would keep their mouth shut when they don't know what they are talking about... too much to ask I suppose.
It will be your regulator brushes, will only cost about $25 for the part, and it is easy to install yourself. The battery will then recharge after another jump.
The fix is in. It was the alternator. voltmeter and a hammer verified the unit was sticking. 12 volts till I smacked it with a BFH then 13.9 for a while. Replaced the complete unit and all is well. Momma is happy and on her way.
BTW Sheepalert- take it easy on those who offer their experience. Even though your advise may have worked, replacing the whole unit realistically is a better alternative given the rest of the unit's age. Show a little respect if you will.

It does seem that people are getting heated.
I would have thought that the obvious thing to do would be to get booked into a garage than you can tell us all what WAS wrong. By the very fact that you have not figured out that it must be rerlated to the battery and or the alternator suggests that you will not be doing the job yourself so get the Yellow pages and book it in. Personally I would not ask a question to a group of people spread all over the World when my car is immobile. If I was asking advice about something like super chargers, body kits, etc then I would use the Forum but as sure as eggs is eggs it is not practical for me to offer you a spare battery when I am over here in England is it? Regards. Chris.
