Recommended transmission and differential fluid?

1984 300SD Turbo Diesel

Attempting to change out the transmission fluid and differential fluid.

Recommendations of which fluid to use. The vehicle is stock, so fluids I can obtain at the local Kragen (or maybe Costco) would be helpful.

Also, for those that have done this before, any advice and things to watch out for?

This will be my first time attempting it on this car, so any advice would be appreciated.

use manufacturer fluid for the tranny and diff. use only mercedes for these applications. for oil and coolant it doesnt matter, oh but it does for brakes...so stick with manufacturer for brakes too.

Its very easy to change both the transmission fluid and differential fluid.

I got my tranny and diff fluids from Autozone, just be sure they are the same consistancy (weight and composition) as the OEM fluids. try to get a hand pump when changing the diff fluid, the fill hole is at an odd angle and may be hard for you to pour the fluid in.

The diff fill hole uses an odd size Allen key. Ask me if you can't find the right size for it, i'll look it up.

Make sure you don't overfill the tranny fluid (check both cold and hot levels). Over filling tranny fluid may damage the tranny more than under filling slightly.

Thanks. How much ATF do you suppose is in there?

From what I understand, automatic transmissions carry A LOT MORE transmission fluid than manual transmissions.

Will my two gallon oil pan be able to hold all the transmission fluid that comes out once that bolt is loosened or do you recommend siphoning it out.

I've got a topsider that I use to change oil. Does a great job of siphoning out oil. It's capacity is about 2 gallons. More than enough for changing oil.

I also don't have access to a lift, but do have car ramps. I'm thinking of just backing up the car onto these ramps and then putting wheel chokes on the front wheels so the car doesn't get away from me. Bad idea?

Also, how long do you suppose it will take.

2 gallons will hold it :)...

2 gallons will hold it :)
invest in a good set of jackstands and learn all the proper lift points to place them at, much safer then ramps.
