Help Needed, 500 sec

Hi all new today.
I have just had both heads refurbished on my 500 sec and i was unable to get a sevice manual, so i marked the cams up at tdc on number one cylinder.
I changed the cam chain and oil pump drive chain because i was going as far as i was with stripping the engine down.
When i rebuilt the heads with the new timing chain my makings on the cam were half a link out but the main pully was at tdc. I asked a free friendly machanic i know and he said it was out because the car has done 145 000 miles and the chain would of stretched, so advance the cams the half a link and away you go.
Rebuilt the engine turned over by hand and no valve to piston probs , so i continued to finish. Tried to start and it will not start, tries too, but i think the ignition timing is well off.
Does what i have done with the cam timing sound right? I realy hope so as it takes along time to take one of the engines apart. Also can anyone tell me the settings for the ignition timing and cam.
Any information would be very grateful.

ps. I think this site is very well put together, i wish i had found this site before doing this job.

Ignition Timing

Joe 500SEC

The igintion timing is none adustable but if you have it a tooth out, it will give the symptons you describe.
Set the engine to TDC first.
If you look at the distributor, there should be a TDC cut out on the outter edge of the housing.
When you removed the distributor originaly (if you did?), you should be able to see on the housing, where the bolt had previously been (this is not a manufactured mark but just the impression left over time).
You need to get the rotor as near as possible to the TDC mark when the bolt is ligned up with its original position.

Hope this helps.[;)]

Would you know the timing mark on the crack pulley to set the ignition and the dwell settings. [;)]

Timing

Joe

How old is your 500sec?

I will stand corrected, but as far as i can remember, you can not set the dwell or ignition on any of the 420/500/560's, as it is all governed by the transistor pack situated on the near side inner wing.
If it is a very early 500, then maybe it can be but i don't know the settings.
there should be a sticker on the front slam panel near the chassis plate with all the settings on. If it has come off over the years then maybe a phone call to your local dealer will prove fruitfull.

Found the ignition information thanks. When trying to fire the stobe light is about 4 degrees as plate says, so i'm going to check the cam chain timing just to rule that out.
Thanks for all your help i'll let you know how i get on after the weekend.

No ignition on 7 & 8 !!!!!!

It runs, but not on 7 and 8 ??????
I double checked cam chain timing, thats ok, Checked ignition thats ok, swapped over injectors for cylinder 1 & 2 and thats ok.
When it's ticking over i slacked off pipes to 7 & 8 and i get fuel coming out so i'm lost.
I went to mercedes today and told the technical department everything that i have done, they are just as stumped as i am.
Anybody got any ideas ?

However i am starting to doubt what i have been told by mercedes about the positions of firing, they say that as you look at the front of the car cylinders 1 to 4 are on the right and 5 to 8 are on the left, does this sound right.
