w126 & w124

I had a w126 (1981 300SD), I lost her in a car accident and now I'm looking for a new car.

I would like to know you opinions about the w124, the 300E to be precise. Is it a good car, good mpg, durability, etc?

300E is a great choice. SOME people say it was the best benz ever built (others say 126). Rather quick in comparison to your old car, and check what type of engine is actually in that 300e. I believe there were a wide range of engine sizes, anywhere from 2.6 or 2.8 up to 3.2L. Don't know about MPG sorry, but it's probably decent. Put AMG monoblocks on it and it's a sweet ride.

From having a 1981 W126 280SE for 3 years, I can definately say that the W124 runs rings around the W126. Its far more nimble and in my opinion rides better. The W124 series has one of the best chassis in the business and has always been highly regarded in this aspect. I can see you came from a diesel. Do you prefer diesels to gasoline? The 300D is still very efficient but doesnt touch the 6 or 8 cylinders in acceleration or effortless driving. Im not sure what your priorities are, but the W124 to me is probably the best benz ever built. In this case, the later model doesnt always mean that all the bugs were ironed out. As many people are aware, the M104 straight-six has its well known problems with the head gasket and the wiring harness, which arent as bad I guess as the earlier models. Apart from that, whatever W124 you choose, im sure you will enjoy it over the W126.

Diesel has his prod and cons, and so does gasoline. I'm a college student, so diesel does cost to much for me plus the mpg is great, but it's still slow as for the acceleration. Also, the car doesn't heat up fast enough in the winter, kinda cold here up un Canada this time of year. That's why I was thinking of buying a 420sel or the top 560sel, but then when I think of it, it's gonna cost me alot for gas and the mpg isn't all that good, but you get the acceleration. That's why I am looking at the 300E, a straight 6 3.0L, not to big na doesn't burn up to much gas, with good power 177HP 185lbs/ft, plus it's smaller and more nimble than the w126.

The w126 S class is just as nimble as a w124 E class. That is what is so damn cool about the S, that it is the only large car in the world that has the manuverability and handling of a small car. So don't base your decision between an 'E' and 'S' on nimble driving because it dosen't come down to that. But there will always be people that just prefer a smaller car in general. If you want a smaller car and like the 'boxy' look, then go for it. If you ask me, I think the 300 SE would be the perfect car for you because it has the same 177hp inline 6 engine with great gas milage.

True yes, the size of the car can change peoples opinions whether they should buy it or not. I think it really comes down with what you want to do with it. The W126 and W124 have alot of virtues that they share and do not share. Therefore, there is no point saying something in favour of another because someone will be sure to point out that im wrong. Im just explaining things from my experiences. So my experience differs from yours. Whether a W126 or a W124 is chosen, im sure you cant go wrong.
