Front steering dampner

I have recently been driving and noticed that after i accelerate the steering wheel shakes and wobbles very hard left to right almost like the frontend is loose or a tire is going to fall off. i took the car in and they said its the steering dampner. i was wondering how hard is it to do. and if any one has had this problem and corrected it.
