Considering purchasing a SEC

Hello Good People, I've been away for some time though have been using my SD still as my daily driver. I went through years of turmoil related to trying to get a staggered set, 8/9, of Penta rims (Penta brand made in Britian). Short version is I was never able to get them to fit on my SD which is lowered with Eibachs. I drove around with them for a long time though discovered that they were getting destroyed on the inside of the rear passenger side. Anyway that and my 15 daughter backing into it as she learned to use a stick shift left me disheartened on the car. I got a 94 C280 for $400 to fix and flip but ended up really liking how it drove and was about to buy a cleaner version of one when I happened upon a 90 SEC black/black.

Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in!

So this car is completely stock, pretty clean inside and out, 168K and is reported to have only a couple problems (needs fuel pump relay and central locking pump). Owner is second one and he is checking with the original owner's mechanic, who he knows, to see if the timing chain has been done. Priced at $2500 so I am thinking a pretty good deal? Saw it tonight and I am going to test drive it on Monday.

So my questions:

Anything about the deal I should worry about assuming the car races well and shifts smoothly?

Can I get my 8/9 rims on there and have them fit without having to bend anything? They are ET 11. I won't be lowering it. I'll get some pictures of my rims on my SD tomorrow and post.

Thanks for the help and good to be back!

Yes the British Penta front 16 x 8 et11 and rear 16 x 9" et11 are a straight bolt up
(how do i know because i also have a set of those plus the AMG/ATS version 8/9 combo)

Best tire set up is from tirerack rear BFG 255/50/16 rear
Front for non lowered is 225/55/16
There are no inner tire clearance issues at all and no outer as well

If front is lowered then you go down to 225/50/16 tire but if not lowered it leaves too much gap to the wheel arch and looks odd.

Thank you KRH, just the info I needed! I think I will buy the SEC so that I have a reason to keep the Pentas! Have 245/45 and 225/50 on there now but they need replacing. Drove around on them on the SD for a couple of years but there were rubbing issues and I didn't realize how bad the inside problem was. Lucky I didn't have a blow out. (Tried to add pix but they were always upside down???)

$2500 for a nice 560SEC is a great price. Buy it as these cars are starting to float upwards in value, mark my words.

With great ambivalence I bought the SEC (90, black on black, 162K). At a distance all looked well but after test driving it I discover that the brakes fluttered greatly with the ABS light going on and off. The under carriage had a lot of oil everywhere, shocks were completely shot and the driver seat felt to have a broken spring. Paint had a few chips and the hood must have been repaint because it was faded in a completely atypical way. So it looked like not a lot of maintenance had happened. Engine was mighty though, transmission shifted smoothly and the alignment was straight. Got up to 95mph quickly so as an SD driver that was very fun. Wanted to walk away but couldn't and got him to agree to $2200. She looked pretty in my driveway when I woke up in the morning so I'll let her stay a little while.

I've lived the truth already of the great expense of a cheap Mercedes though the journey was priceless. The other thing less stated here is that in terms of marriage it is a lot easier to buy a cheap Mercedes and then launder money into it slowly over time. Have 3 Mercedes (and pickup) and need to get down to one Mercedes. Next up I am going to play around with my wheels and will post pictures. Goal is to get the Pentas on the SEC and the GenII rims on the SD. At first pass it looks like the tires on the Penta will be to short and the tires on the GenII's will be too tall but I will test them both first.

Nice start, check your rubber fuel lines under the hood and check the chain guides unless there is documentation where they've been changed already
