TRI-Y INSTALL UPDATE

The Tri-Ys & down pipes are in.. The Euro NO CAT front pipe is in as well..

The new 'proper' Kidney Bean resonator pack is in situ.

The stock rear muffler & other details will be attended to next week.

The guys at European Auto Solutions, nearby in Waltham, MA had to 'finesse' the euro front pipe as to inlet flange size and spacing too. The 'stock' pipe, intended for a 420, was too small a diameter and the inlet lateral spacing was too narrow.... [for my 560 install].

A 'donor' exhaust component gave up its' inlets & bits which were apropriately grafted onto the front pipe, whose inlet pipes were reworked so as to mate up to these 560 tri-y down pipes.. [which proved a bit farther apart]...... aaaaand 'unobtanium', as I have researched.

The result is tight & rattle free.. if a bit aggressive sounding... ala "muscle car" .... Its temporary. I think.

Knowing how much it meant to me, EAS made the car driveable, so I can attend the car show Sunday.

Thank you EAS guys!

I CAN drive to German Car Day on Sunday!

A smile on my face all the way home tonight...

Henrik had a nice solution by deleted the kidneys, and instead used in line hush-puppy resonators stacked as there was no room side by side (behind the 2 in - 2 out cat).

Thanks Horst,

You are right: "there was no room side by side (behind the 2 in - 2 out cat)."
Thats a big one!

I think I should offer up the 'Euro cat [2IN/2OUT], Euro cat downpipes et al, as they have as of yesterday, become redundant. Additional info: less than 40K MILES total as removed earlier today...

I currently have NO NEED for these M117 Eurolog exhaust manifolds, unblemished L&R Eurolog downpipes, and lastly... the 'monster' euro 2 in/2 out Cat converter.

Wake up your motor. Save the Planet...... really.

NOW.

Malc, On my setup I have a bit of flex pipe south of the flange of down pipe heading into a 2I/2O magnaflow under the seat pan, continuing to follow to the tail where the same magnaflow resides. I used SS hangers rather than rubber donuts and Vband clamps. I needed that can to keep my wife in the car.... Happy wife as they say

I hear you man....

Mine has the 'cat delete' euro front pipe, Kidney Beans and the stock rear muffler box on it...

I just took a 300 mile road test all highway & very light traffic.... Way up into Vermont with all those big looooong hillclimbs... It sounds GREAT! NO highway drone to speak of .. but a nice rumble at idle ... then when one opens it up .. YOWSER! You CAN hear the exhaust note like never before!

Its really sweeeet and pegs the ButtDyno too...

Thanks all,

MBL

Congrats. Looks like a big job.
Just curious. How much would it be to make custom headers with the rest of the exhaust?

I dont bother with these mods, because I have a 420.

Those tri-y's, downpipes look familiar! All of the hardware looks good, too! So, just to be clear, the OEM Y-pipe with the built in X crossover had smaller diameter ends vs the downpipe ends? And to make the Y pipe fit, you had to graft on coupling ends from a donor exhaust?

Hello Al,

For clarity, Al was kind enough to part with his treasured Tri-Y manifolds & down pipes, passing them along to me. In addition, he sourced factory gaskets, mounting hardware etal.. including them in the box & plus pointing me in the direction of Swain Tech for the ceramic heat treatment you see in the pics above. In addition, he has been most kind to answer every single query I have thought of along the way including whether or not I should step up & buy this euro 500SEC in the first place.... Many, many thanks to you Al.

In answer, yes, the crossover / front pipe apparently was intended for a 420 and as such had a tad smaller diameter inlets and flanges than the 560 tri-Y down pipes.. To rectify this, an aftermarket Bosal 560 resonator was obtained and the inlets were grafted onto the MB front pipe.

In addition, the lateral spacing of these inlets was somewhat narrower than what was needed for the build and this was finessed to fit.

The pipe outlets are the same configuration as OEM stock, in this case, a 500 euro KAT M117.965 engine.

To say I am pleased with the result is an understatement. Move over Rip Van Winkle....Its as if the car has finally 'woken up' after a 26 year sleep!
