Hello!
So i've managed to get my dream car, a 560 SEC possibly AMG. Its been lowered, has amg alloys and a spoiler/body kit. I have no idea if theres anything amg in the engine bay but someone forked out for a full stainless PowerFlow exhuast so I'm hoping thats the case.
Anyway I've dumped a load of pictures below, as you can see its been stood in a barn for 10 years so it needs a good amount of TLC.
Firstly, I need help sourcing some body panels that i can get welded. Mainly the rear right panel located in the bottom of the boot, as well as both rear arch corners and under the rear window. Also the rear right jacking point has rusted through.
Secondly how do I manually close the sunroof? I've googled this across different forums and all i have is a white plug rather then red hex nut.
Next I need rubber seals for the door, does MB still make these?
Lastly the SLS reservoir is nearly empty, what fluid do i put in it? The rear isnt sagging so I'm guessing the system works?
Welcome to the forum. Could you fill out your profile for us please so people know roughly where you are in the world? I recognise the brand of brake fluid so I'm guessing UK?
The cars varied quite a lot for different markets.
I wish you well but I think that car might be a bit too far gone to save. Pull anything AMG off of it that you can find and put them on something less rusty. It will cost a FORTUNE to get that back to even close to OK. There are lots and lots of decent cars to start with out there for a couple thousand bucks, if you want a project i would start with one of those.
I picked it up cheap enough and these are getting really expensive in the UK. I'll get it welded and resprayed in Poland cheaply so i dont mind the work tbh.
I'm pretty sure MB sells the metal in the back under the rear window that you can weld in and i would imagine door seals are still available. Google how to manually close the sunroof, something should come up.
I don't think its realistic to find an SEC without rust in the UK. They are probably out there I suppose but that would be a very rare beast. The problem is how well presented they can be. I saw a gorgeous grey one with provenance that was for sale for ages with Lorinser bits - it was completely rotten under the rear screen, hence no sale.
In lieu of finding a rust free one, more realistic to budget for the repairs. These are old cars now and we're used to the rot.
Ps OP, could you fill out your profile for us please to show UK? Lots of differences in different market areas.
The repairs in the boot well are pretty normal, MB sells the replacement metal. They sell the rear window lower lip too. Screen R&R is circa £100 but does have some risk. New rubber seal is circa £100. Bit of a theme here lol ....
Door seals are available but will be expensive. I wouldn't be tempted by cheaper versions, MB rubber is the best fit etc by far. That goes especially for the rear window seal. Lots of problems on here with people having bought cheaper rubber stuff that only lasts 6 months or doesn't fit.
If you watch Wheerlers Dealers, that should give you an idea of how sorry condition some of the U.K. and european cars are due to rust....
We are quite spoiled here in the States condition and pricewise.
Good luck with the car- I don't think it looks bad at all. Maybe I'm too used to Mercedes rust here in Ireland!
I'm sure you will turn it around. The market here is strong for classic Benzes. A good 560 is ~ £10,000GBP. Any AMG nes will put that up if the car is restored.
Anyway- note regarding the low SLS fluid. This is a sign that one or both of the Acumulators could be failed. They can be tested to see. But if there are no records of them having been replaced within the last couple of years I would just go ahead & buy a pair of of new Corteco Germany units or Genuine MB only.
That is- if there are no signs of a SLS fluid leak somewhere.
