1989 560 sel

I'm buying my first MB. Its a 1989 560 SEL 172,0000 miles, costing me $10600 out the door(tax title registration and a four year warranty) Its in very good conditon-a few minor touch ups needed on paint and chrome, timing chain replaced 15000 miles ago.The mileage seems high but I've been told that Mercedes run 'forever' I've never bought a used car before and I'm just looking for a little reassurance that I'm not crazy!

I think you got a good deal. What does the warranty cover?

Crazy? Heck no . . .

. . . the W126 chassis is one of the best MB ever built. I may be biased, since I have one, but to me they just seem to say, 'Cashmere overcoat, gold Rolex, get the hell out of my way.' What color is yours?

Smart of you to check about the timing chain. No, don't worry about the mileage, just enjoy it. There may be parts to replace over the years, but the solidity of the car makes it all worth while.
Re: 1989 560 sel

It's a keeper. I too own a 1989 560sel with 240K miles. It drives smooth and it is just a delight.
However I have some problems, but that is expected from a car that was used and maintained to just minimum standards before I got it. Since I have owned it, I fixed up a few things and spent some serious money to do so. It was worth it. I would rather do it on this car and have no debt than buying a new benz (cause I wont buy anything else, unless the RX7 is back on the market LOL). Once taken care of, this car is a tank and will reward you in many ways.
Enjoy the car and let us know what you did.

I agree also. Going to take my Dad's 560 back to college with me this year and it is a great car. I have about 140 thousand on mine and have been driving it when I come home for the past year. Enjoy!!!

Re: 1989 560 sel

thanks to everyone who responded. I've had the car almost a week now and I love it. The only problem I've had was I set off the alarm at 6:45am on sunday-I did not know the car had an alarm(my husband had set it accidently) and I sure did not know how to stop it! The 1-800 road side assistance number was very helpful! The warranty I purchased with the car covers engine, transmission, electrical, roadside assistance etc. Its good for 4 years and the peace of mind I got was worth it. I have a feeling I will have no regrets about this car!

Great Car

I just bought mine in May and I just love it! I sure hope you do to. This is my first MB and have enjoyed learnging about them here and at the forums at http://www.mercedesshop.com/ , I have found that MB owners, especially 126 owners, are most helpful and have been very kind with offering their thoughts and ideas on the questions I ask.

Re: Great Car

Hi,

I have a 560SEL 1990 model, i have a problem with the transmission, it takes longer than usual to shift from first gear to second, but second to third gear is working just fine, is there anyway to adjust so the first gear can shift to second at a speed below 30 Kilometers per Hour? I hope you can give me your opionion or any one you know who might have knowledge about it. thanks.
