My car has a problem with the radio cutting out at random times. Whenever this happens, it's accompanied by the antenna retracting automatically (same as when it's turned off or ignition is switched off); time display disappears also. Whacking the side of the console with my fist restores radio (at random, of course). My guess is that I have either a bad ground or an intermittent power supply.

Sometimes the climate control operates the same way i.e. the fan suddenly kicks in after a long time off. I suspect similar power-or-ground gremlins.
My question: what is the most graceful way to get at the radio/heater area, to examine the wiring there? There are no obvious screws or fasteners visible, like in older Benzes I've had ('62 220S, '70 280S).
I have no workshop manual like I did for my older cars; I understand they are no only available on CD now - bummer.
Thx for your help!
I had a similar problem with my air conditioning. Be tried fixing EVERYTHING on the a/c and we figured out it was the actually switches that you press that were messed up. That might be the fan problem?
to get to the center console you have to remove the ashtray assembly first. To do that, slide out the ashtray, and lift up on the 'cigarette disposal' part. You will see two phillips screws, undo those and slide the ashtray out. YOu will have to undo a lightbulb and two wires that power the cigarette lighter. Once that is removed you should be able to see how to remove the radio, mine has an aftermarket one that just pulls out so your on your own untill you get the radio out. Once the radio is out, if you look right above where the radio went you will see two more phillips head screws that point up(sharp tip to top of car), remove those and you can slide out that peice of wood. Then you can access your acc unit, undo the two bolts that hold it in and pull it out. I suspect your intermittant blower is part of a faulty solder joint inside the acc unit, unless it does this when you press any of the buttons that turns on the blower, in other words, does it do it when defrost/ec/or multi direction is pushed or JUST the normal setting? Getting it back together looking good is a little more tricky, you have to line the acc unit back up with the wood so it protrudes just enough and not too much. If you need any more help go to www.mercedesshop.com and find the forum section, then do a search for 'dashboard removal' and put my name in the username-RG5384, you shoudl find all the info you need including many pictures. Hope i've helped
Ryan
