w126 1985 500SEL Transmission slipping

1985 Mercedes 500SEL. Issue :transmission slipping. I drained the old ATF and dropped the pan. The old fluid was unburnt, clear/red and free of debrit. I replaced the filter and gasket both new. I refilled the transmission half way, wamed the motor while engaging the shifter into drive then nutral, then park multiple times. I continued to add the ATF until the propper level was attaned. The Bordon was adjusted too.
it seems that if I start from a complete stop, I will not expirience slipping. If i am aready driving/ coasting and then press the accellerator, this is when the transmission will slipp. I have adjusted the MOD , by turning counter clockwise to get acceptable shifting points.... please help, I am a DIY'er , that is intimmidanted by transmission shops!
Thanks ,Okyboky O.C., CA

What is your IDLE RPM? If you are above 600, then does it slam into reverse? (or did it before you changed the atf)

Did the PO ever have the tranny rebuilt? Could be time to spend the money to get the tranny overhauled. But not if you have a high Idle, you need to fix that too, or you will just wear out the tranny again in 25k miles. I had similar circumstances and it took about 3 minutes to get into reverse, I rebuilt the tranny for about $1,200 installed.

before i had adjusted the Mod. it did go into REV. harder that i would expect. The PO is my father in law. he gave me this beutiful automobile. told me that it would require proper maint. but he claims the transmission has never had any issues....

Is the idle high from park, and does it lurch in reverse, do you need to put down the brake to avoid a peel out ?

Car is almost 30 years old and I suspect 150k or more on the spedo. Things wear out.

High idle kills the tranny over time.

I suspect your slippage is due to wear, and new fluid filter did not change your experience. It is possible that there may be another set of plausible remedies, but slippage indicates bad pressure of the components, and some r/r is needed, or a complete rebuild.

Here is a good resource for you, hunt around here: 1968 to 1995 Mercedes Automatic Transmission Shift Rod Bushing Replacement Tools | MercedesSource.com

Good luck.

Not entirely sure with Mercedes autos but my old Cressida`s kickdown cable didn`t like being adjusted too much ( In the tightened position) and the result was a trans that slipped.

My Mercedes is driving me around the benz..

Trans problem

Hi The break away is due to low pressure. The seal in the front pump has probably cracked from age.The trans needs to come out and the front pump removed and inspected, under the clip you will find a retainer along with 12-15 springs when removed you can pull out the housing from the input there you should see the problem,if the clutches are ok try just a seal kit.Joe
