Cluster Brightness ?

While doing other searches on this forum, I hit a thread on ways to brighten the cluster. I can't find that thread again after various searches.

Using the same bulbs, have any of you found ways to make the cluster brighter?

That was Azimuth Avaition's post in Mclare's speedometer decal thread. It was mentioned last week in a thread. In a nut shell, you take the white plastic shells off the Cluster and paint them white with plastic paint.

Yeah that makes it much better actually. Your prisms need to not be melted from incorrect bulbs too.

Prisms are just the clear plastic things that conduct the light from the bulb housings into the front of the cluster. Often get melted and browned, hence poor light. Very common because of wrong bulbs.

Has anyone tried putting alum foil in the bulb housing?

There are mixed feelings about LEDs in these cars. I would just love a backlit cluster.

The LED bulbs do not work properly as I bought a set and tried them. Unless you get the kind with many LEDs, and even then they are not that good.

The reason is because of the prisms that Ian mentioned. LEDs do not transmit the light in all directions for the prism.

Yes, aluminum foil works, but glue it to the inside on the bulb compartment flatly.

I tried the foil & it seemed helpful. Ditto with the LED bulbs. I got the type with many bulbs but it was never quite right so I ended up going back to normal bulbs.
