Question 1985 300SD engine shock absorber

Hey,

I need help. I have been told I needed to replace both engine shock absorbers and the engine mount since the engine has been shaking pretty badly, rattling the whole body as a result. I live in Poland and it is rare to find new and quality parts for W126 diesels. I have found plenty of engine suspension parts for gasoline type engines. Now, will the SE (SEL) engine shock absorbers, engine mounts and other engine suspension components fit the SD type? I can get the parts from the well-known MB parts places in the US but the shipping costs will kill my budget, not to mention the time. TIA.

Does the engine shake all the time, or once warmed up? If the latter, a rack bolt/pin adjustment or replacement may be your problem.

The attachment shows which shocks will fit. Your SD is a 126.120 this link shows the chassis numbers: Mercedes Chassis & Engine Identification Chart

EDIT: The shock is used primarily for when the engine is shut off, you get a pretty violent shake and the shocks tame that.

They will fit the sd, i have installed engine mounts from a v8 560se on my sd, and its worth it, costed more but lasted longer, i have had several sd engine mounts and they just lasted 1-2years, but with the more heavy duty v8 mounts its still is working fine now for almost 5years, the small engine shock well you can do away with this as i have several friends who did not install these shocks for their sd's and they are still ok, no body shakes

Hey Rmac58,
the engine tends to shake while warm and idling. I can have it at a complete stop and I could just feel entire body shaking. When the engine is cold and I start it, it also gives me a pretty good shake while starting. If I don't hold it at a 750-800 RPM's it will die and I have to start it again. I have played around with the rack bolt adjustment but to no avail.

My mechanic tells me that my engine mount is really bad, soaked with oil, the rubber does not hold up that well anymore. The engine shock absorbers looked like they have never been changed. It looks like I need a set of those shock absorbers along with the kit. If those are not the cause of the shakes, it sure will be a good thing to replace them anyway. I will research further the cause.

I have been thinking about that too but was not too sure whether the bigger displacement engine mounts would fit my smaller SD. On the picture, they all look pretty much the same.

There are two reasons why I am so stock on those engine shock absorbers:
- I went to a shop that does W116, W123, W124, W126 (and latter W's of course) and told me what was wrong
- I saw mercedessource.com video about possible causes of the engine shock and surely the engine mount and the absorbers were the cause of it

For now, I can only rely on those sources, which seem to be pretty reliable. Now, it is my job to find the most reasonable-priced parts and have my mechanic perform his magic.

At 1st i was using original engine mounts for the sd but replacing them every year was quite an expensive thing to do, they wont last for more than a year thats why i decided to use the v8 engine mounts and they really are very durable as i have mentioned 5years with no engine violent shaking, and i also decreased the idle down to 800 and the engine runs really smooth

so, now I know a lot about engine mounts but what about the shock absorbers? Can I replace the SD engine shock absorbers with the SE engine ones?

yes you can, the shock for the engine support will be an exact fit, i fail to mention that i too have installed the engine shock from a 560sel, and as well as my 2 front shock absorbers which are amg and front coil spring all from a 560sel which was parted out here, the ride has become more smoother than stock springs
