617 diesel into 560 SEL

Well since i failed Aircare (Hydrocarbons), its time to plan out swapping my 617 into my 1990 560 SEL.

I am wondering if anyone has tried to mate the 617 (5cly turbo diesel) onto the 560 transmission? Is it possible? Need an adapter? The tranny is in good shape and was aparently dealer replaced several years ago. So i can bolt it up to the 617, great, if not i'll sell it.

Thanks in advance!

I think the starter is on opposites side but not sure as I have only had diesels and never the V8. Search...

I know you have a 617 already but if I was going to the trouble (you have more to do than the transmission) you would get a lot more satisfaction out of OM603 over the OM617.

Hi, i do have a couple 617's and love these engines because they run forever and dont mind other fuel blends and bio. In regards to performance, i will be building an OM606 to put in my Cosworth. Thatll be a tire shredder, this is a family cruiser.

Just putting it out there if anyone has tried to mate the 617 to a 560 trans.

How difficult it is to fix to the H/C problem? Typically high H/C is related to a bad O2 sensor or something in the iginition. I couldn't imagine fixing those is more trouble / costlier than doing the disel swap.

HEY youre in Vancouver!! Cool. I have new wires and O2 sensor, it probably needs: plugs, cap, rotor as a minimum. The H/C was really high so it is likely has a few other costly items like Idol Control valve, other electronic engine management controls and mabye even catalytic convertor. The way i see it is i am at a minimum $600 - $2,000 to buy myself another year or two.

On the other hand i have a excellent condition 617, factory rebuilt trans to swap in and get 30 mpg instead of 10 mpg and be able to run bio Diesel. I plan on a larger turbo and intercooler also.

The downfall is taking away from the originality of a really nice Black on Black 560 SEL, however, ill have essentially made a 300SDL for 1/3 the price. And the swap is fairly easy, just one bracket to relocate and weld for the engine shock, swap tach and wire in glow plug light.

And the a 5.6 could always be swapped back in at a later date.

Know anyone who wants to buy a complete 5.6 with accessories and trans?

I'm just across the pond in Victoria, lining up to do a SDC....might be able to find a home for your SEL here, no aircare....but good for you lining up to do the diesel swap.

FWIW, I have seen nothing but tragedy when folks run the OM617 on anything else but dino...just sad, leaky tired motors the result. I ended up sticking with the dino and riding my bike (motor or pedal) - that did more to reduce my carbon footprint than anything..

Another BC resident, right on! SDC? "S" Klasse Diesel Conversion? If you know what youre doing, other fuels can safely be run in these engines, they are most famous for alternative fuels due to their durability and strength of the pump.

I wouldnt sell my 560 SEL, its too beautiful, i am in Love with it! haha But ill like it even more once the paint is freshened up, new rims installed and a 617 in it!
