+1, though that doesn't always go the way you hope it will. Yes, there are just two wires going to this switch and three on the other ones. Schematic attached. The ground side of the switch connects behind the instrument cluster and the warning module is to the left of the steering wheel behind the lower dash cover.

Have you tried the dome lamp control relay in the fuse box. correct me if I am wrong but the dome light is actually on a timer activated by both front doors. however the door courtesy lights are not. I believe the rear doors only activate the rear dome light and the courtesy lights seperately. so you say the front passenger door will activate the front dome lamp but not the driver door. try this out for kicks. when you open the passenger side front door and then close it, does the dome light stay on for a few seconds? or does it go out instantly? if it goes out instantly I would suspect the dome lamp control relay.

Thanks -- was hoping for that, too! But the passenger door opening/closing resulted in the overhead front light staying illuminated for a few seconds as you said it does. Thanks for chiming in...

You are welcome. However I just went back and re-read the first post and this statement caught my attention. you said that you removed the driver side door jam switch and completed the circuit by connecting the 2 wires together right? if you did that, well its not going to work. you need to ground each individual wire to a ground source. the switch could be at fault here. or you could simply swap the switch with one from another door, or have you tried this by now?

Ive had a similar problem for a while now, but a little different. My dome light wont work when either doors are opened, (for my SEC). My buzzer works, but only when door opened while headlights left on/key left in...(not sure if this is how it's supposed to be?) Although I just realized my puddle light on my passenger door doesnt work, as ive swapped from my drivers side and it must be wiring. I read the post about the "dome lamp timer relay" in the fuse box. Where is this relay? Ive searched and read every thread on dome lights already. Im getting a lil sleepy from reading Sorry if this is an obvious question....

This is interesting... I have the same problem also. Exactly as how this thread describes it. However I swapped the switches from the other doors to the driver's side, and no go. However, if I open any of the three other doors, all the lights illuminate. I haven't pursued it any further, but I'm not much of a whiz with electricity (sorcery if you ask me).

Well, I don't know if you already tried but last time my 300E went to shop and came back my dome light was not working while opening door but it would work when i close door at all times. As I didn't even know where that switch may be i looked at door how its opening and closing and show a switch.
I pulled switch out, show two wires going, swap them and operation was back to normal.
Since your light does not come on when inside car i will rule out this situation but hopefully some newbi like me may be helpful knowing this in future.

Next step, test ground. Pull out switch, disconnect ground wire. Connect a test wire from the switch where you removed the ground wire to another ground location. You can use where the battery is grounded or pull off the lower dash carpet cover beneath the steering wheel and look for a ground location up in there. If the light works, you have a ground short. If not run the test ground to the other side of the switch (bypassing the switch). If that doesn't work move on to the warning module.
